Quartermaster Tax

Quartermaster Tax 93% of small businesses overpay taxes. We specialize in helping you save that money, and get money back the IRS owes you And, they don't even know it.

Most small business owners and near or retired individuals are the largest segment of people in the US that overpay in taxes. In fact, many small business owners are donating up to 48% of their tax money to the IRS and individuals can be as high as 30%. There are three areas that need to be considered when identifying if you are among those that are overpaying in taxes:

1. Determine how much mone

y you spend on your livelihood yearly, and if you are paying taxes on more than that dollar amount, you are most likely paying too much.

2.Ensure that the proper tax entities are chosen for your business and that individuals are set up in the right qualified accounts that minimize tax obligations.

3.Make sure that your cash flow management is tax efficient, so that expenses and charitable giving is deducted properly. Quartermaster Tax Management works with those who are looking to not only grow the money they make, but keep it. Often financial advisors only look at the returns on investment, not on how much of that goes to the IRS. We make sure the investments that our clients make don’t adversely impact their taxes. For example, one of our clients came to us where they were paying 38.7% on dividends instead of the 15% they were obligated to pay. The biggest cause of this was the fact that their tax advisor and financial planner never even talked, let alone work together in the overall best interest of their client. If you are concerned that you have been overpaying taxes, we invite you to have a quick conversation. Even if you already work with a CPA and/or Advisor, we are confident our call will help you understand your current situation and even uncover specific areas where you may be at higher risk. Ferris Bueller said it best.

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

Ferris was talking about skipping school in a Ferrari. I'm talking about a federal refund check worth $30,000, $60,000, or $90,000 that disappears in 7 days if nobody goes looking for it.

Same energy though.

The R&D credit retroactive window doesn't care that you were busy. It doesn't care that it kept landing on a bad week. July 4 hits and the door closes — and the only people on the other side are the ones who stopped and looked around in time.

7 days left. You just have to take 20 minutes.

Real talk.

I've posted about deadlines. I've told you about Mike and his $90,000 check. I've compared the R&D credit to the NFL Draft. I've talked about cash flow, CPAs, and the IRS more times than any reasonable person should have to.

And yet here we are. 9 days left.

So I did what any reasonable marketing director does when he's running out of ideas. I made a Nike ad.

Because at this point I don't think the problem is information. You have all of it. I think the problem is that making the call feels like something you'll do later, and later keeps moving, and now it's 9 days away from not mattering anymore.

Just do it.

20 minutes. Free. No commitment. Just a straight answer about whether your business qualifies before the window closes for good.

Nike didn't sponsor this post. The deadline is still real.

Spirit Airlines flew their last flight Saturday.

34 years in the air. 17,000 jobs. Two bankruptcies in 18 months. Gone.

The CEO admitted it on the way out — they needed hundreds of millions in cash they "did not have and could not procure."

Read that again. The money wasn't there when they needed it.

Here's what nobody wants to talk about: 70% of businesses that qualify for the R&D Tax Credit never claim it. Most owners think it's for tech companies and white lab coats. It's not. If you've improved a process, built a product, tested a new method, or solved a technical problem this year, you probably qualify.

And right now? This is the most generous R&D credit window in history. The IRS retroactive filing deadline hits July 4. After that, those years are locked away forever.
Nobody plans for the bad year. You only get to decide whether you optimized your business while the sun was still shining — or whether you're scrambling for cash you should have already had.

What's the most overlooked tax move you've seen a business owner make?

It's SURPRISINGLY EASY for Medical Practices to get R&D Credits, but almost none do!

Let me tell you about a business owner. We'll call him Mike.

Mike runs a solid operation. Good revenue, good team, works hard. His CPA handles everything clean every year. No complaints. He'd heard about the R&D credit before but figured it was for bigger companies. Tech companies. Not a business like his.

He got on a call with us anyway. Took 20 minutes.

Turns out Mike had been doing qualifying work for years without calling it anything. We identified $90,000 in credits across 2022, 2023, and 2024. Not a loan. Not a deduction. A refund check from the IRS — three years recovered at once because the retroactive window was still open.

He almost waited until fall to look into it.

Here's what that would have cost him.

The IRS retroactive cutoff is July 4. But July 4 isn't when we need to start — it's when we need to be done. The analysis, documentation, and filing process takes time. We need to begin new studies by mid-May to make that deadline. That's 17 days from now.

Miss that window and $90,000 becomes $30,000. Not because anything changed about his business. Just because the calendar moved past a date nobody can go back to.

He didn't wait. He booked the call, we did the work, and he's getting a check.

The NFL Draft is this week, and I can't stop thinking about how much it looks like tax strategy.

Hear me out.

Every year, teams spend months — and millions — identifying talent that other teams walked right past. The sleeper in round four who becomes a Pro Bowler. The guy everyone dismissed because he didn't test well at the combine. The pick that looks obvious in hindsight but required someone to actually do the homework.

The teams that win drafts aren't always the ones with the best scouts. They're the ones who showed up prepared while everyone else was winging it.

The R&D tax credit works exactly the same way.

Most business owners are sitting on qualifying activity right now — processes they developed, problems they solved, work they did under technical uncertainty — and they've never had anyone evaluate it. Not because it isn't there. Because nobody looked. The credit doesn't go to the businesses that deserve it most. It goes to the ones who showed up and claimed it before the window closed.

And the window is closing.

July 4 is the hard IRS cutoff for retroactive filings. After that date, 2022, 2023, and 2024 are off the board permanently. No extensions. No exceptions. Just a missed pick you can't go back and make.

21 days left.
