Caroline Hawkins wrote this one. Full story in our May newsletter: Sell in May and go away" has just enough truth to be dangerous.
Since 1990, the S&P 500 has averaged 6.3% from November through April and 3.3% from May through October. The pattern is real.
But real doesn't mean reliable. Anyone who sold in May 2025 missed the strongest monthly gain since 1990. And over the long haul, a $1,000 investment left untouched in the S&P from 1976-2025 grew to about $295,000. The same $1,000 following the "sell in May" rule? About $46,000.

We're hiring at Dyer & Company.

We're looking for a part-time Client Services Associate, someone detail-oriented, reliable, and looking for flexible morning hours that work around family life. No financial services background required.
If that sounds like you or someone you know, I'd love to hear from you.

Part-Time Client Services Associate

Dyer & Company, LLC — Charlotte, NC

Dyer & Company is a fee-only, independent financial planning firm in Charlotte. We work with a select group of clients on comprehensive financial planning and investment management, and we take the relationship seriously. We're a small team, intentionally so, and we're looking for someone who wants to have an impact in a professional environment without the noise of a big organization.

The role

This is a part-time position starting at approximately two days per week with hours that flex around your schedule. We expect the role to grow as the firm grows, likely expanding in the fall.
This is a great fit if you're re-entering the workforce, looking for meaningful part-time work in a professional setting, or want something that works around school-age kids. We care more about reliability and attention to detail than prior financial services experience.

What you'll actually do

— Keep our CRM current, updating contacts, logging activities, and flagging follow-ups
— Handle account paperwork and coordinate with our custodian on new accounts, transfers, and requests
— Manage incoming mail, sorting, scanning, routing, and organizing
— Coordinate and record proxy voting during proxy season
— Prepare materials ahead of client meetings
— Help with scheduling and follow-up logistics
— Support general compliance recordkeeping and file organization

What we're looking for

— Organized, reliable, and comfortable working independently once you know the routine
— Detail-oriented, the kind of person who notices when something's off and takes care of it
— Prior office, administrative, or client-facing experience is helpful but not required
— Comfortable learning new software
What we offer
— A small, friendly team with awesome clients where your work genuinely matters
— Flexible morning hours built around your schedule
— A role that's designed to grow with the firm
— A competitive hourly rate commensurate with experience

To apply, please send a brief note about yourself and a resume to [email protected].

Markets are down, oil is up. Everyone's heard of Trump Accounts but nobody can open one yet. This month's newsletter cuts through the noise — what Trump Accounts actually are and how to think about them, a Roth IRA move available today for parents of working teenagers, and a plain-English look at prediction markets. On this day in 2009 the stock market had its lowest close of the financial crisis. The S&P 500 closed at 676.53 and the DJIA was at 6,547.05.

That same day the Wall Street Journal ran the headline: Dow 5,000? There's a Case for It.

If you gave into the fear and sold that day, you missed one of the greatest bull markets in history.

More Americans are turning to AI for financial advice. That's not all bad — there's no barrier to entry, no judgment, and no awkward questions. But more than half of people using generative AI for financial decisions have made a mistake as a result, according to one survey. As we head into year-end, there's more to think about than tax moves and 401(k)s. The real planning happens in conversations—with family, with trusted advisors, with yourself. This month, we're sharing questions worth asking before 2025 closes. What would you ask?
