Some may have noticed that yesterday evening, Central City Fire Department personnel were removing the red & white flashing lights from the viaduct on North Second street. This was being done for multiple reasons.

1) After discussions with P&L Railroad earlier this week, we have learned that they will be replacing the missing piece of steel on the Sonic side within the next 30-60 days. Therefore, the lights would need to be removed for them to complete these repairs.

2) There are plans in the works to provide a face-lift for the viaduct this fall. We hope to put on a new coat of paint and possibly incorporate a mural to make this area look much better.

3) Well, to put it quite simply, the flashing lights have proven to be ineffective and expensive to maintain. Vehicles still hit the viaduct and the lights create a distraction for other drivers, especially at night.

Due to all of the above, we will not be reinstalling the flashing lights. We will, at the direct request of P&L Railroad, incorporate a painted yellow and black chevron strip on the upper edges of the viaduct once the other painting is completed. This will still draw attention, but cost much less to maintain.

This may be a temporary solution. Those of us who have been saying "RAISE THE BRIDGE".... Well, we've been informed that's in the works. 😉 More to come!

Phillip Groves was sworn in as Central City Fire Chief by Mayor Malcolm West. Phillip has been in the fire service and served his community since 2004.

Help us welcome Chief Groves into his new role. We are confident that when the tones drop, his department will be ready to answer the call.

Central City’s retired Fire Chief, Ricky King continues to serve in the fire service on a state level.

Ricky served many successful years in his role as Chief at Central City and we are proud his work continues to make a difference.

Past President Smeathers, Secretary Henderson, and Past President King were in attendance working the fire service booth at the Ky State Fair today.
