Divorce is hard enough. Add allegations of coercive control or hidden assets, and the process becomes exponentially more complex.

Colorado recently updated its statutes to allow courts to consider coercive control in family law matters, which is an important development that's also creating real confusion for people navigating divorce right now.

Much of that confusion stems from expectations shaped by social media and AI-generated advice that simply doesn't reflect how family courts actually work.

The smartest financial decisions in divorce aren't always about fighting every battle. They're about knowing which ones will actually move you forward.

If you're navigating a complex divorce, make sure your team includes professionals who understand both the legal and financial landscape. Learn more in my latest blog:

That investment account might not be worth what you think it is.

If there’s a margin loan attached, the number on the statement is not the number you’re dividing in a divorce.

And in a volatile market? The gap between perception and reality can get big.

I see this mistake all the time, and it can lead to:
→ Unequal settlements
→ Unexpected losses
→ Forced liquidations at the worst time

I put together a breakdown of what to watch for and the questions you should be asking before anything is finalized.

Dividing investments in divorce isn’t as simple as splitting the number on a statement.

If a brokerage account has a margin loan, that “balance” can be misleading. The real number that matters is equity, and in a volatile market, that can change fast.

A 25% market drop doesn’t mean a 25% loss in value when leverage is involved. It can be much worse.

In this article, I break down:
• What margin really is
• Why it matters in divorce
• How margin calls can impact settlement outcomes
• The costly mistakes I see too often

Did you know Colorado eliminated the 93-overnight cliff for parenting time credits? Under the old law, one overnight could make a significant difference in child support. The new rules are more realistic, but also more nuanced. Here is what changed:

- Parenting time credits now follow a graduated scale instead of an all-or-nothing threshold
- Medical expenses are now shared from the first dollar, without a - $250 per-child annual minimum
- Combined income thresholds increased from $30,000 to $40,000 per month
- Child support and spousal maintenance rules are now better aligned

If child support is part of your divorce or a modification is on the horizon, now is a good time to understand how these changes could affect your monthly cash flow. Read the full post here: https://amf-divorce.com/our-blog/child-support-changes-in-2026-the-financial-impact

A mediation position statement shouldn’t just say what you want.

It should clearly explain what you need and why it makes financial sense.

Too often, people walk into mediation without fully understanding:
• What their post-divorce budget really looks like
• Whether asset proposals are sustainable
• The long-term impact of their requests

Our latest blog post explains how financial preparation strengthens mediation position statements and why this work should happen before you sit down at the table.

If you’re preparing for mediation, this will help you feel more confident and grounded: https://amf-divorce.com/our-blog/mediation-position-statement-financial-preparation-matters

When people hear “mediation position statement,” they think legal strategy.

From a financial perspective, it’s really about clarity.

The strongest position statements aren’t argumentative, and instead, they’re grounded in realistic budgets, sustainable support requests, and a clear understanding of the marital balance sheet.

In my latest blog post, I break down:
• The real purpose of a mediation position statement
• Three common ways they go off track
• Why financial preparation should happen before mediation

If you’re heading into mediation or advising clients who are, this preparation can completely shift the tone of the process.

As a financial professional, I see one of the biggest mistakes people make in mediation is negotiating without fully understanding how the decisions will actually work in real life.

Support looks fine on paper, until it affects mortgage approval.
Asset division feels fair, until liquidity and taxes enter the picture.
Housing decisions make sense, until the post-divorce budget doesn’t support them.

The Entering Divorce Mediation Prepared E-Workbook was created to close that gap between theory and reality.

Inside, you’ll find guided tools to help you:
✔ clarify goals, interests, and priorities
✔ build realistic current and future budgets
✔ understand spousal and child support impacts
✔ organize a clear marital balance sheet
✔ prepare questions and talking points for mediation

Mediation rewards clarity and strategy, not last-minute decisions under pressure.

If mediation is coming up and you want a structured, financially grounded way to prepare, the workbook will be available soon.

Divorce mediation can feel overwhelming because most people walk in unprepared for the financial realities they’re negotiating.

I’ve seen how different the experience is when someone enters mediation with:
• a clear understanding of their finances
• realistic future budgets
• clarity around what actually matters long-term

Those clients feel more confident, less reactive, and far more satisfied with the agreements they reach.

I just shared a new blog post (and a new resource coming soon!) on Preparing for Divorce Mediation, including common pitfalls, why the marital balance sheet matters, and how preparation leads to better outcomes.

If mediation is on your horizon, this post may help you feel more grounded walking in.

Divorce mediation is one of the most important financial negotiations you’ll ever face, and it moves fast.

The people who tend to leave mediation feeling confident about their agreements aren’t the loudest in the room. They’re the most prepared.

That’s why I created the Entering Divorce Mediation Prepared E-Workbook, which is a financially focused, step-by-step guide designed to help you walk into mediation with clarity around your goals, your numbers, and your real-world options.

This is not a generic checklist or emotional journaling exercise. It’s a practical preparation system that helps you:
• understand your current and future cash flow
• organize assets and debts clearly
• think through support, housing, and lending realities
• identify what truly matters — and where flexibility exists

Preparation doesn’t eliminate hard conversations.
It helps you make better decisions when they matter most.

The workbook is launching soon.
