The John Rowland Scholarship 📝

For a bit of background on my grandfather-in-law John, he’s:

1. An esteemed alumni from NC State that LOVES his WOLFPACK NATION 🐺
2. A former athlete for State’s 1968 World Series Baseball team ⚾️
3. Someone I’m PROUD to call FAMILY 🙏

We created this scholarship in his honor to CELEBRATE and SUPPORT the academic success of NC State students and give back to a university that has given us SO much and SO MANY opportunities 🔴 ⚪️

Thank you to Lexi Wirth on helping us assist the future of NC State. Honored to be supporting its growth 💯

Indecision….IS a DECISION…especially FINANCIALLY 💡

Future you….will thank CURRENT you on:

1. Not GUESSING and creating a STRATEGY 📝
2. Making CHESS moves with your money vs. focusing on checkers ♟️
3. Understanding that AI is a HELPFUL tool BUT cannot make decisions for you. You MUST take action yourself! 👌

Cheers to YES’s and NO’s. There’s no more STRESSFUL plan than “thinking about it” while the world PASSES you by 💯

We don’t know….what we don’t know 💡

Could I have guessed that in 4 months:
1. Brooklynn would be hospitalized twice
2. Surgery on my lower back
3. Consistent illnesses
4. Going through a disability claim as both a client…and an advisor on the same plan
5. Our dog Molly would be hospitalized

No one could have predicted that…but I come here looking for 0 sympathy. More to share what I’ve learned in going through this all at the same time 👇

What we can control:
1. The community we choose to build around ourselves 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒
2. An optimistic perspective 🤔
3. Prayer 🙏
4. Our reactions to situations 💯
5. The defeated find excuses…the successful find solutions 😎

As my man from Jamaica once told Megan and I…”We have no problems….we just have situations”. Blessed to have the support we do 👌

Credit to Jeff Jackman in motivating me to think about how to “stand out” in your personal AND business relationships…here’s 5 ways you can be viewed as DIFFERENT to others 💡

1. Remember kid’s, grandkid’s, and pet’s names: Thoughtfulness comes in the details of referencing past the basic “how are the kids, how are the dogs, etc.” 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 😒🐶🐱
2. Wait at least 3-5 seconds after someone stops speaking to share a response and don’t interrupt: People want to be UNDERSTOOD not responded to 👂
3. Ask 2-3 clarifying questions: Shows curiosity, actual interest in what they are saying, and the ability to give a more IMPACTFUL answer 🗣️
4. Buy into being WEIRD: I started sending “birthday videos” this year which usually consists on my cringe singing…but they are MEMORABLE since NO ONE else does it 🎉
5. Send gifts without asking for permission: Everyone likes a compliment and feeling appreciated. The more tailored the gift to their personality / situation…the better 🎁

Building meaningful relationships takes time, patience, and the willingness to get out of your comfort zone. Start today! The world FAVORS the BOLD…like taking an impromptu trip week of Texas to spend time with your people 💯

High income earners…I’m about to give you the secret sauce…topics almost none of my clients had previously understood before engaging…💡

Strategies and ideas you may have never heard of, EVEN IF, you’ve been working with a financial team for years that creep up on us without PROACTIVE planning…🤔

1. Net Investment Income Tax: If you make over $200,000, how are you ACTIVELY planning to mitigate / eliminate the 3.8% extra tax on many of your accounts? 👀
2. Dividends and Capital Gains Taxes: Taxes to pay EVEN IF you don’t sell ANY holdings. The bigger your investment account becomes, the higher the tax drag will be. Your tax bill now…is likely the lowest it will ever be… How are you ACTIVELY planning to mitigate / eliminate these taxes? 🗣️
3. Maxing Social Security Wage Base: You max out the social security system at $184,500 of earnings. Let’s say you make $500,000…that’s nearly $20,000 additional dollars that can be PROACTIVELY used for your planning. How are you ACTIVELY planning with these dollars? 💵
4. Additional Medicare Tax: If you make over $200,000, .9% of every extra dollar earned has increased tax. Check your paystub! 📝

Chances are, more than 90% of people reading this haven’t heard of anything I just referenced and have no strategy in place. It’s okay! It just means you are normal. We can’t solve problems we DON’T KNOW EXIST 💯

The first step in fixing a problem…is RECOGNIZING there is one. Take the first step…solve problems BEFORE they start…no one likes a big tax surprise April 15th…and even worse…leaving opportunities on the table 💰

Should you….or should you not have joint bank accounts with your SPOUSE? 🤔

While it would be easy to go into financial reasons, I think this comes down to core beliefs and principals on the level of TRUST you are willing to SHARE with your spouse 💡. Food for thought:

Pros:
1. Joint accountability on all spending 📝
2. Joint goals and income 📈
3. No secrets 👀
4. Enhanced financial communication 🗣️
5. High levels of trust 👂

Cons:
1. Joint accountability on all spending 📝
2. Joint goals and income 📈
3. No secrets 👀
4. Enhanced financial communication 🗣️
5. High levels of trust 👂

The answer of whether you “should” or “shouldn’t” comes down to if you SEE the above as PROS or CONS 💯

Personally, all joint for the Sytsma household EXCEPT the business checking account…Megan and I agreed on that being a hard one to stomach the ups and downs 😂

Planning for illness hits DIFFERENT when YOU are the one being treated 💯

For the last few months, I have been on and off ill and had attributed it to “Oh I have a new born…this is just part of the deal in getting sick.” 🍼

Days off, up and down energy, losing my voice, pain, and more…ignoring what my BODY was TELLING me 🤔

Fast forward to this week after multiple doctor visits, and I was diagnosed, unexpectedly, with a serious illness…and it’s thought to have been with me since my December Thailand trip 😅

My encouragement while I start a lengthy recovery process is this….FINANCES are the LAST thing on my mind 🙏

If you haven’t already, and it doesn’t have to be with me, speak to your financial team about your PLAN for illness:
1. Do we have a game plan for if I get sick?
2. How would it financially get funded?
3. What are the chances of me getting sick?
4. How long would my funds last if I did get sick?

Today is a day to be grateful. I’ve been fortunate to have great mentors, guides, and advisors around me where I was ready BEFORE this happened. On the road to recovery. Will be back soon 👊

Leading the next generation to financial success will FOREVER fill my cup 🙏

Grateful for the opportunity here to be invited back on campus at NC State by Joshua and his team partnered with SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) and ALPFA (Association of Latino Professionals For America) to dive into financial literacy 🐺🐺

PS - Y’all should’ve seen how hyped this group got when we laid money on the table for the winner of a group wide Rock, Paper, Scissors war…LOVED the ENERGY 🪨 📄 ✂️
