When was the last time you stress tested your business?

Not when things were on fire. Not when something broke. Intentionally.

Most owners don't really know where their business is vulnerable until life forces the issue. A key person leaves. A major customer changes direction. The owner wants to step back and realizes the business can't run without them.
By then, the stress test is happening whether you planned for it or not.

We put together a short business stress test to help owners get their bearings see where things are solid and where there might be hidden pressure points.

It's quick, practical, and designed to surface things most owners haven't been asked before.

If you're curious: https://www.summitsway.com/stress-test

If you take it, I'd be interested to hear what stood out.

Meet Tom Burchhardt, Founder of Summit's Way Strategies

Over the last decade, Tom has worked across multiple industries: wine production, craft beverage operations, managing regional sales for a coffee company, and helping startups figure out their early stages.

He loved the work. But he kept seeing the same thing.

Business owners who were experts at their craft, roasting coffee, making wine, building software, running service companies, spent most of their time buried in operations instead of doing what they actually loved.

And most had no idea what their businesses were worth or how to build something they could eventually exit on their terms.

That's when Tom realized his calling wasn't just in business operations. It was in being a guide for business owners trying to build valuable, transferable companies.

He founded Summit's Way Strategies after moving into comprehensive financial planning. Working with families and businesses, he saw the same challenge everywhere: passionate owners needed someone who understood both the business side and the personal goals driving everything.

Someone who would sit on their side of the table with their CPA and attorney. Not as another vendor, but as an advocate making sure everything connects.

Today, Tom helps business owners understand what their companies are worth and what's holding back that value. Then they work together to close the gaps.

He brings genuine curiosity to every conversation because the best strategies come from understanding what actually matters to you, not what a textbook says should matter.

Tom's clients come from all over: restaurants, coffee shops, service businesses, tech startups, insurance agencies, breweries, wineries. The common thread? They're experts in their craft who want to build something valuable while getting back to what they love most.

Success means three things: growth in business value, the ability to focus on what you want in your business, and an exit that gives you what you need for the road ahead.

Every mountain has its own path to the summit. Every business owner's journey is different. But with the right guide and a proven approach, that summit is always within reach.

When he's not working with business owners, you'll find Tom exploring the outdoors with his family, hiking trails and camping under the stars. Those adventures remind him that the best journeys aren't taken alone.

Curious about what your business is worth or what's holding back its value?

What does your company's advisory team look like?

On one side, valuable pieces scattered everywhere. Your accountant, your attorney, your financial advisor, your insurance agent, maybe a business consultant or two. All experts in their field. All working hard, but they're not connected. Your accountant doesn't know what your attorney is planning. Your financial advisor isn't talking to your insurance agent. Everyone's doing good work, but no one's building toward the same picture.

On the other side? The same pieces, coordinated and aligned. Your accountant, attorney, and financial team are all working from the same blueprint. They know your goals. They communicate. They build together.
The difference isn't the quality of the advisors. It's the coordination.

As a business value advisor, I help business owners build the castle from the pile. I work with your existing team, your accountant, your attorney, your other advisors, and help coordinate them around your goals. And if pieces are missing? I can bring in the right people to complete the picture.

Because you shouldn't have to be the one managing all your advisors. You should have someone helping you build the vision while your team executes it together.

Why not build your business so you could sell it?

No saying that you have to sell it but wouldn't it be better to know you could if you wanted to?

A business built for potential sale is also built to run without you. Better systems, stronger financials, less owner dependency.

Whether you sell in 5 years or pass it to your kids in 20, you end up with a more valuable, sustainable company.

Plus, you get to enjoy actually owning a business instead of just owning a job.

How do you look at your business?

08/13/2025

I've been working on something for a while and wanted to share what I'm up to these days.

Many of you know I've been in the financial world for years, while I am still a financial advisor, I took the leap and started something that feels really right. Summits Way Strategies.

I help business owners figure out what their company is actually worth and what it needs to be worth for their goals. Sounds simple, but honestly, most business owners I talk to have no idea what they've built in terms of actual value.

After working with everyone from coffee shops to service based companies to tech folks, the pattern became pretty clear: these are smart people who are great at what they do, but they're not always sure what moves the needle on building real business value.

It's been really rewarding helping people step back and see the big picture of what they're building. Plus, the work we do can actually increase what their business is worth, so when they're ready for their next chapter, they have real options.

Business owners, what's keeping you busy with your business these days - growth challenges or operational issues?

Mindful Monday🍃

It’s alright to admit why we are all here. We all want to grow our networks, build opportunities, and find success. That’s the purpose of LinkedIn and that’s okay.

So, knowing that, I am going to completely diverge and take a moment to be thankful for the moments away from networks, opportunities, and “success”. Moments with friends and loved ones.

This weekend had beautiful moments in the woods which gave me the opportunity to sit and reflect, be in the moment, and to just have fun and be goofy. It is everything that I needed.

So please,
Don’t forget to take a break.
Don’t forget to take time to sit with yourself.
And please, PLEASE, don’t forget to have fun and be goofy.

LinkedIn will be here when you get back.

Happy New Year, Everyone!

I had the opportunity to step away for a few weeks but did want to take a moment to say that I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season.

As I start off the new year I want to start it with gratitude.

I am very grateful for the time that I was able to share with my family and loved ones over the holiday season. It was the perfect ending to the year.

Wishing you all the best in the coming year!

Why a cup of coffee?

I ask people to grab a coffee, like, a lot, but why?

The answer is probably more complex than you think.

Initially, people may think it’s because I am trying to pitch them something, but, unless it’s decided upon before we sit for our coffee, I am there to meet someone. I am there to truly get to know someone. I am there to show someone who I am.

I ask people to coffee because I understand that they have a complex life and I have a complex life and, for this moment, we can sit and have an opportunity to learn about each other's complex lives. I love settling in with people and learning what makes them who they are and I am always more than happy to share what has made me who I am.

Just a beautiful moment of authenticity.

But, you see, there is more. I am in an industry that is marred by stereotypes. I am conscious of those stereotypes, and decidedly not those stereotypes, but I might as well be until someone gets to see me for who I really am.

A cup of coffee gives me the opportunity to say “Hey, I am a normal guy, I have a family, I have struggled, I have succeeded, I care for people, and I want to help.” It clears away the preconceived notions and shows me for me.

I ask people to get a cup of coffee to break stereotypes, to share in each other’s worlds, and maybe, just maybe, see if we can help each other along in their journey.

Want to grab a cup of coffee?

I just wanted to take a moment to say how proud I am of my little lady for doing her first 5k. It was decided early on that we would run, skip, and walk our way to the finish line and I would do it however she wanted to do it. What we didn't expect was a downpour halfway through the 5k. While many people quit and left she just kept plugging along. Sometimes we ran, sometimes we skipped, sometimes we walked, but she always kept going.

I am just so proud of her dedication and perseverance and beyond grateful to have her in my life.
