We just finished a 2025 return for a new business client.

As part of our review, we looked at the prior-year return prepared by someone else and noticed that the Pass-Through Entity Tax (PTET) election had not been made. Had it been made, it likely would have saved the client about $3,000 in federal tax.

Their income was higher this year, and we made the PTET election as part of their 2025 return. The projected federal tax savings is about $6,000.

Their prior-year preparation fee was approximately $1,250. Our fee this year was $1,750.

So they paid about $500 more in preparation fees and saved roughly $6,000 in federal tax.

PTET does not make sense for every business, but it’s something that should be intentionally evaluated.

We review it for every partnership and S corporation return we prepare in states with an income tax. Sometimes it helps. Sometimes it doesn’t. But it’s worth doing the analysis.

Not everything that matters can be measured.

That might be an unexpected thing for an accounting firm to say.

Recently, we sent some of our clients a copy of Frederick by Leo Lionni - a children’s book about a little mouse whose contribution looks very different from everyone else’s.

While the other mice gather food for winter, Frederick gathers sunshine, colors, and words.

It’s a simple story, but the message has stuck with us.

We believe deeply in doing the measurable work well. Accuracy matters. Deadlines matter. Numbers matter.

But so do steadiness. Encouragement. Creativity. Trust. Helping someone feel a little less overwhelmed when things are uncertain.

Those things are harder to put on a spreadsheet, but that doesn’t make them less valuable.

Maybe that’s the reminder we all need sometimes: make room for the things that don’t fit neatly into a cell.

Sunshine. Color. Words. Rest. Joy. People.

They’re part of the work, too.

✔️ Choosing the right strategy at the right time

Good tax planning isn't about being clever.

It's about being intentional.

We're halfway through the year.

Now is one of the best times to pause and look at how your business is really performing - not just how busy you've been.

A mid-year financial check-up gives you time to make adjustments before year-end instead of reacting after it's too late.

Ask yourself:
• Are you on track with your revenue goals?
• Is your cash flow where you expected it to be?
• Have your expenses crept up?
• Are you setting enough aside for taxes?

You still have plenty of time to change the outcome of your year.

The businesses that finish strong aren't usually the ones that wait until December to look at their numbers - they're the ones that review them throughout the year.
