Today’s project: making sure a business owner’s retirement plan is actually working for the business AND the people in it.

After reviewing and benchmarking the existing plan:

-Over $4,000 in annual expenses saved!!!!

-Professional fiduciary support added- shifting key responsibilities to professionals whose job is to help get it right.

-89 employees now have access to a financial professional! Not just a website and a 401(k) login.

A real local person! That means someone can actually sit down with them and talk about:

Retirement.
Buying their first home.
Getting their finances on track.
Protecting their family.
And building an actual plan for the future.

That’s what I mean when I say a 401(k) should be more than an employee benefit. Done right, it becomes a tool for financial wellness, retention, and taking better care of the people helping you build your business.

Sometimes the plan isn't broken. It just hasn't been looked at in a while.

Before adding another employee benefit, ask yourself one question: Are we getting everything we can out of the benefits we're already paying for?

Because turnover is expensive, and right now, retention deserves attention. According to Gallup's latest data, 52% of U.S. employees are either watching for or actively seeking another job. Now look at what replacing an employee can potentially cost:

• Frontline employee: ~40% of salary
• Technical professional: ~80% of salary
• Manager or leader: ~200% of salary

Put that into actual dollars. A frontline employee earning $60,000 could represent roughly $24,000 in replacement costs.

A technical employee earning $100,000? Roughly $80,000.

A manager earning $100,000? Potentially $200,000.

That's where I think businesses need to look differently at their existing benefits. You may already offer a 401(k), health insurance, and other benefits. But do your employees understand how to actually use them to improve their lives? Financial wellness workshops can add another layer of support to an existing benefits package:

• 401(k) and retirement education
• Budgeting and debt strategies
• Emergency savings
• Homeownership education
• Understanding workplace benefits
• Access to financial guidance

The goal isn't to throw another expensive benefit into the package. It's to create more value around what you're already paying for, while building a stronger retention strategy around your employees.

Because when 52% of employees are keeping an eye on other opportunities, the question isn't only: "What will an employee wellness program cost?"

The bigger question might be: "What is it costing us when good employees leave?"

If you’re a business owner or HR professional, it may be worth reviewing whether your current benefits are doing everything they were designed to do. I’m happy to be a resource.

Making $150K doesn't automatically mean you're building wealth.

A high income can still come with a low net worth.

Quick financial reality check:

Cash sitting idle isn't a strategy...
Keep your emergency money accessible. But long-term money sitting in cash may lose purchasing power to inflation.

Your old job's 401(k) still needs attention...
Old doesn't mean bad, but forgotten accounts still have investments, fees, and allocations worth reviewing.

Saving and investing are not the same thing...
Saving protects short-term money. Investing gives long-term money the opportunity to grow through compounding. Inflation slowly eats away at those savings!

Lifestyle creep is real...
Make more → spend more → wonder where the hell the raise went.

Income without protection can leave a huge gap...
Building assets matters. Protecting the financial obligations attached to that income matters too. Protect your loved ones! They shouldn't have to make a GoFundMe.

A paycheck isn't a financial plan...
You can make $150K a year and still have no idea whether you're on track for retirement.

Income is what you make. Wealth is what you build.

Not ready to sit down and unpack your entire financial life yet?

Start here. 👇🏼

How Money Works is basically a crash course in the money stuff most of us should’ve learned a long time ago.

It breaks down things like:

• how money actually works

• debt + the cost of borrowing

• saving and investing

• compound interest

• retirement

• protecting your income and family

• building better money habits

THE best part? You can go through it at your own pace. No pressure. No judgment. Just education. Sometimes the first step isn’t hiring someone or making some huge financial move. Sometimes it’s simply understanding what the hell all of it means first. Read it. Highlight it. Question it. Learn something. If you get to a part where you’re like, “Okay, Sophia…what does THIS mean?”, that’s where I come in. Start with education. The rest gets a whole lot easier from there.

Until next time, go learn something that school forgot to teach you.

I reviewed a 401(k) plan recently where the employer thought everything was fine.

And that’s exactly why "benchmarking matters."

A retirement plan shouldn’t be something you "set up and forget about." It’s a business tool, and if it isn’t being reviewed, you may not know whether it’s still doing its job.

Three BIG reasons to benchmark your business retirement plan:

1. Stay competitive.
Benefits matter when you’re trying to attract good people and keep them.

2. Know what you’re paying for.
Fees, investment options, participation, and plan design can change. Your plan should be reviewed to make sure it still makes sense for the business and its employees.

3. Turn the 401(k) into a retention tool.
You’re already offering the benefit. The question is: Are you actually using it strategically?

A 401(k) shouldn’t just check a box.

It should help your employees build financial awareness while strengthening your business.

When was the last time someone actually benchmarked your plan?

Phew this is painfully real. People see all the roles leading others, running a business, mentoring, studying for my licensing, showing up for my family, while still managing a demanding career on top of it all, and they ask, “How do you do it?”

The truth? Sometimes I don’t.

I’m not balancing everything perfectly. I’m prioritizing what matters most in the moment and giving it my best. Some days I’m exhausted. Some days I wonder if I have anything left to give.

But I keep showing up. Not for the applause. Not because it’s easy. But because the mission matters.

If you’re tired but still choosing to show up every day, I see you. Keep going. Your consistency matters far more than perfection. 🤍
