Today’s tax task: identify possible deductions and credits — don’t claim them yet.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming they qualify (or don’t) without ever checking.
Preparation isn’t about deciding today — it’s about identifying what might apply.
For individuals, look back at last year and ask:
• Did I pay for education, childcare, or medical expenses?
• Did my filing status or dependents change?
• Did I have side income or self-employment expenses?
For business owners, ask:
• What expenses were necessary to run the business?
• Did I use my vehicle, home, or technology for work?
• Were there new tools, software, or contractors last year?
Write down what might apply — no judgments, no conclusions.
Knowing what to ask about is half of preparation.
I’ve shared clear, practical resources on my blog that explain common deductions and credits — and where people usually get confused.
