Profit sharing can be one of the most overlooked tools for business owners looking to reward employees while staying flexible.

When the business has a strong year, you have the ability to share some of that success by contributing to your employees’ retirement accounts.

And unlike many benefits, profit-sharing contributions aren’t fixed year to year. You can adjust contributions based on profitability and the needs of the business.

It can also become a powerful retention tool through vesting schedules that encourage employees to stay and grow with the company over time.

At its best, profit sharing becomes more than a retirement plan feature. It’s a way to align your team with the long-term success of the business while investing in the people helping to build it.

If you’re a business owner without a retirement plan, chances are you’re relying on an individual IRA.

While that can be a starting point, it may be limiting how much you’re actually able to set aside.

Employer-sponsored plans, like a SIMPLE IRA or 401(k), often allow significantly higher contribution limits. For business owners with strong income years, that difference can meaningfully impact both long-term savings and current tax exposure.

Retirement plans aren’t just an employee benefit. They’re a strategic planning tool for the owner, too.

If you’re unsure whether your current setup is maximizing your options, it may be time to take a closer look.

In this short video, our Wealth Coach, Christine Mathieu, shares something that often surprises people when they first begin working with her.

How much someone has or how much they earn does not always explain how they feel about money. In many cases, the emotional relationship people have with money tells a much more important story.

This perspective is one of the reasons wealth coaching has become such a valuable part of the planning process. When people better understand their relationship with money, financial decisions tend to become clearer and more intentional.

Real planning is not just about numbers. It is about understanding the narratives people carry and helping them make decisions from a place of clarity rather than guilt or fear.

In practice, retirement is rarely about simply leaving a job and doing nothing.

For most people, it is a transition into something else, whether that is starting a small business they have always talked about, spending more time volunteering, or finally leaning into interests that were pushed aside during their career.

What we often hear, though, is “I’ll just work until 65... what else would I do?”
And when someone says that, it is usually not about ambition; it is about uncertainty.

Even if the numbers work, there can still be hesitation underneath. For us, it’s important not to brush past that moment. We pause, acknowledge that anxiety, and help you think through what this next phase could actually look like.

Retirement is not the end of something. It is the design of what comes next.
