Turning 73 comes with a tax deadline most people don't hear about until it's too late.

Once you hit 73, the IRS requires you to withdraw a minimum amount from your traditional IRA and 401(k) every year—it's called a required minimum distribution. You must take this year's RMD by December 31.

Miss it, and you'll pay a 25% penalty on what you should have taken out. Not 25% tax—a 25% penalty, on top of regular tax.

Not sure if you've taken yours, or how much it should be? Reach out, and we'll figure it out while there's still time.

The scariest thing this Halloween: a call "from the IRS" demanding payment in gift cards.

The IRS will never call to demand immediate payment, threaten to have you arrested, or ask for gift cards, crypto, or wire transfers. Scammers love this season—with a new filing year ahead, fall is prime time for tax identity theft.

Got a suspicious call, text, or letter? Reach out, and we'll tell you if it's real.

Some tax moves have a door that closes on December 31.

Charitable gifts, retirement contributions, adjusting your withholding—all of that counts for 2026 only if you do it before the year ends. You can't backdate anything you do in January.

A dollar moved in November can save you more than ten dollars moved in April, because in April there's nothing left to move.

Want a quick year-end checklist made for your situation? Reach out, and we'll put one together.

Thinking about pulling money from your 401(k) or IRA early? Read this first.

Take money out before 59½, and the IRS hits you twice: ordinary income tax on the withdrawal, plus a 10% early-withdrawal penalty on top.

Exceptions exist — disability, certain medical bills, a first-time home purchase (IRA), and a few others—but most people who raid retirement savings don't qualify for any of them. And unlike a loan, you can't put it back.

Before you touch a dollar of retirement money, talk to us. There may be a cheaper way to get what you need. Reach out.

The IRS raised the 2026 retirement contribution limits.

401(k): up to $24,500 (from $23,500 last year). Traditional or Roth IRA: $7,500 (from $7,000).

Pre-tax dollars you put into a traditional 401(k) or deductible IRA might be a dollar the IRS doesn't tax this year. But the contribution has to land before December 31 for 401(k)s — for IRAs you have until April.

Two months left in the year. Want to know what bumping your contribution would actually save you? Reach out and we'll run it.

Got a year-end bonus coming? Here's why the number on the check feels smaller than you expected.

Bonuses are "supplemental wages" — your employer withholds federal tax at a flat 22%. But that 22% is just withholding, not your actual tax. Your bonus is ordinary income, taxed at your real rate when you file.

So if you're in a higher bracket, that flat 22% didn't cover it — you'll owe the difference in April. If you're in a lower one, some of it comes back as a refund.

Either way, now is the time to check your withholding — not April. Want us to run your numbers before year-end? Reach out.

Owed a refund but never filed? Good news: you can still file and get your money — even if you never filed an extension.

The late-filing penalty only applies when YOU owe. If the IRS owes you, there's no penalty for filing late — and you have 3 years to claim your refund.

Don't leave your money on the table. Message us and we'll get it filed.

—

Extension filers: 7 days left. Your deadline is October 15 — next Thursday.

If your return still isn't done, this is the week. And remember: the extension was for filing, not paying — interest has been adding up since April.

Still need a hand? Message us now — there's still time, but the clock is ticking.

—

Tax myth: "A big refund means I did great on my taxes." ❌

A big refund just means you overpaid all year and gave the IRS an interest-free loan. The goal isn't a big refund — it's keeping more of your money in your pocket month to month.

Every week we bust one tax myth. Follow the page so you don't miss it.

The #1 bookkeeping mistake we see in small businesses: mixing personal and business money in one account.

It makes your books a mess, you miss deductions, and if the IRS ever takes a look, it's a headache you don't need. One separate business account fixes 90% of it.

Simple. Boring. Saves you money.

Simple. Aburrido. Te ahorra dinero.
