The question always comes up about claiming charitable contributions. Can you claim them can you not??? The answer Yes and No. Yes you can still itemize but the standard deduction for a couple is $25,900. So, all of your itemization needs to be more than $25,900. You either itemize or take the standard deduction. Look at your return from both perspectives to get the most benefit possible. And keep giving to those charitable organizations from a heart of generosity!

Some of you have been sending cute tax season quotes. Most revolve around spending that refund check. Would you save, save, save or spend, spend, spend?

This week I visited several websites for tax tips.It seemed that every site had a differing perspective and interpretation of tax law. As a Tax Advisor it can be challenging to w**d through opinions and find the facts. So, here are three things I have gleaned.
1.) Each situation is unique. Most tax credits have a list of qualifiers for that credit. You and I might have the same income, same filing status and children the same age but our individual circumstances may change the credits we qualify for.
2.). Know the source. We all know that everything on the internet is not fact checked. If you are reading an article or post and it seems outside the common interpretation, then check the facts. irs.gov is a great resource. Be sure the information you are getting is fact not opinion. If it is generalized, using words like all, every and you will, then expanding your research is advised.
3.) Build a relationship with your tax preparer. This week I was able to sit with a long term client and look at changes that will be happening in their personal taxes over the next few years. We were able to make projections and look at options to lessen the impact. Your personal preparer can keep you informed when tax laws change or expire.
Tax time can be stressful for us all but having accurate and current information will help build your tax season confidence.

You got it in the mail, but now what do you do with it? Early in 2022 the IRS letter 6475 will be mailed out. But what is it? Simply put this letter confirms the total Third Economic Impact Payment (EIP) and any plus-up payments you received in 2021. Both of these payments could have an impact on your 2021 return. You will want to take two actions in response to this letter. First, include it in the documents you take to your tax preparer. And, second, check your personal record to be sure they match. Your total payments can be confirmed by creating an account at IRS.GOV.
