If you received IRS NOTICE CP53E recently...

Executive Order 14247 made changes for the 2026 filing season. IRS wants to eliminate paper check refunds and only direct deposit. If you still chose to have a paper check as a refund, you were advised that your refund would be delayed.

The new IRS Notice CP53E was automatically sent out to anyone who did not choose direct deposit giving you an opportunity to update your online account and enter your direct deposit information. If you don’t respond to the notice, the IRS will issue a paper check after 6 weeks.

However, we believe there are erroneous letters being sent out to those taxpayers who actually owed taxes or had their refunds applied to next year. If you owed taxes or had your refund applied, we are advising you to ignore the letter for now. We cannot get through to the IRS to find out why these letters are being sent out to individuals who were not expecting a refund.

There are also scammers who might send out letters that look like these new IRS notices with a QR code.

PLEASE BE SAFE and never scan a QR code on a letter. Always visit the official IRS website to login to your account or call the IRS directly.

A recent Executive Order 14247 led to changes in the direct deposit options you now have available. The new direct deposit change will allow individual taxpayers to provide us with a new or updated bank account to receive their tax refund via direct deposit if certain conditions are met.

Don’t be alarmed if you have not seen your IRS or North Carolina payment come out of your bank account yet.

Most of the United States population scheduled their payments on the same day – April 15- It’s gonna take a while for all of those payments to process. Just give it a few days.

If you have an LLC or Corporation-

BEWARE of the mailings and emails asking you to use a service agency to file your annual report with the NC Secretary of State.

They charge you to do what you can do yourself.

Make sure you stay compliant by filing your annual reports each year to stay current.

Secure .gov websites use HTTPS A lock ( ) or https:// means you’ve safely connected to the .gov website. Share sensitive information only on official, secure websites.

If you were paid overtime in 2025 and that amount is not listed on your W-2 in Box 14 (or your employer did not provide you with that amount) - please bring in your last pay stub for 2025 to take the deduction for overtime pay on your tax return.

Keep your receipts for CASH/CHECK/CC donations in 2026 - even if you take the standard deduction.

If you take the Standard Deduction in 2026: You can deduct up to $1,000 in cash donations ($2,000 for married filing jointly) directly from your taxable income ("above-the-line") without needing to itemize. There is no 0.5% reduction for this group. (This does not include donated goods.)

If you Itemize in 2026: Only the portion of your total charitable contributions that exceeds 0.5% of your AGI is deductible.
