What would your family truly inherit if money didn’t exist? 💭

Legacy isn’t just what’s written in a will. It’s the stories, lessons, and values we live out every single day. It’s how we treat people, what we stand for, and the moments that leave a mark long after we’re gone.

In this month’s Wealthought Out, I share how my own family’s experience forever changed the way I think about estate planning — and why I believe it’s really about building bridges, not just signing papers.

💡 Your will may transfer your wealth, but your life transfers your legacy.

We don’t just pass down what we save.

We pass down how we lived.

What we avoided.

What we stood for.

Early in my career, I watched families pass down money but not meaning.

Trusts were set up. Inheritances arranged.

But what lingered wasn’t peace.

Sometimes it was confusion, other times resentment, and even silence.

Because the true wealth, the values, the stories, the “why” was never spoken.

What happens to the next generation if all they inherit is safety without soul?

Legacy isn’t what you leave behind, it’s what you live out loud, now.

Because what we model today becomes the permission our children feel tomorrow.

The Lakers just sold for $10 billion.

If Jerry Buss had invested in the S&P 500 instead? He’d have $13 billion.

Some are calling it a “no-brainer.”

But if he took that path, we might never have had Kobe. No 11 championships. No ripple effect of inspiration that helped a generation (including me) believe in something bigger.

We need to stop asking…

“What’s the best investment?” and start asking:

“What kind of life do I want my investments to create?”

Talking about money isn’t just about wealth.

It’s about dignity.

It’s about choice.

It’s about love.

What if one brave conversation could save your family years of confusion and pain?

It means a lot to be recognized by the Investments & Wealth during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

Not simply because of my background but because of what that journey continues to mean in the work I do every day.

I’m the son of two immigrant parents who came to this country with a little more than hope and grit.

We didn’t talk much about money growing up. But I remember watching my Mom at the kitchen table, quietly balancing the checkbook, paying bills, making it work-no matter how tight things were.

That image stuck with me.

It taught me that wealth isn’t loud.

It is a quiet strength. It is sacrifice. It is stewardship.

Today, I work with many families who share similar stories to mine. Immigrants building a new life. Leading and growing their buisinesses. Multigenerational families navigating both cultural expectations and financial complexity.

And I see myself in them. I see my parents.

When I sit across from a client, my purpose is to empower them to courageously pursue new possibilities and lead a life of fulfillment. To support them in honoring the generations who came before them. To help them turn their sacrifices into strategy, and legacy. To build bridges between generations, cultures, and dreams.

I’m proud to bring my heritage into every room I step into. And I’m grateful for the people who trust me to walk alongside them on their incredible journey.

Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islanders in Wealth Management: Kristoffer N. Fu, CPWA®, CFP®, CEPA©

During Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we’re proud to spotlight the voices and journeys of AAPI professionals who are shaping the future of finance—like one of our scholarship recipients, Kristoffer N. Fu, Managing Director, Private Wealth Advisor at Evoke Wealth Management.

For Kris, the path to financial advising wasn’t planned—it was personal. “Honestly, I’d say this career chose me,” Kris shares. “As the son of two immigrant parents, I grew up in a home where money wasn’t discussed. But I watched my mom balance the checkbook at the dinner table each month. That quiet act of responsibility left a lasting impression on me.”

After earning a degree in business economics and working in sales through college, he stepped into a financial advisor role, not knowing just how deeply his own life story would shape the way he serves others. “My parents never had a financial advisor. They had an accountant because paying taxes was a must—but long-term planning? That wasn’t part of the picture. That’s what drives me today.”

Today, Kris focuses on helping immigrant and multigenerational families have the financial conversations that are often avoided. “I’ve lived through that silence. I want to help others break it so the next generation is more informed, prepared, resilient, and empowered than the last.”

A scholarship from the Investments & Wealth Institute’s Foundation also made a tangible difference at a pivotal moment in his career. “I had just gone independent and cash flow was tight. Receiving financial assistance to help me further my knowledge so that I could help more people was a true blessing.”

And his advice for others from underrepresented backgrounds? “Technical knowledge is valuable—it sharpens your skills and builds credibility. But more than that, pursuing advanced certifications gives you the confidence and language to have the kinds of deeper, more meaningful conversations with the people and communities you want to serve.”

We’re honored to support professionals like Kris through scholarships that remove barriers and open doors to lifelong learning and leadership. Learn more or apply at https://hubs.li/Q03nxYY80.

There was once a man walking across the desert, carrying two jugs of water. Later, he was found—passed away—with both jugs still full.

He had what he needed… but he never used it.

That story is a powerful reminder that planning for life’s chaos and the rainy days, is not just about survival—it is about creating the freedom to live with intention and in our purpose. To use what we have been given to help others. To be present and courageously discover new possibilities.

In the end, it’s not our bank account balance that we will reflect on. It is the lives we touched, the memories we made, and the love we gave and received. That’s the real measure of wealth.

I recently attended a fantastic event in celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month hosted by . The theme “Honoring the Past and Rebuilding the Future” couldn’t have been more timely.

We reflected on the impact of this year’s wildfires and the continued need to support our elders, the disabled, and overlooked members of the AAPI community. But beyond the challenges, there was a deep sense of pride, resilience, and hope for the future.

It reminded me of my own Asian American and Pacific Islander roots, the sacrifices of my family and the generations before me. Their strength is my foundation. Their perseverance fuels my purpose.

It’s why I’m deeply passionate about helping immigrant and multigenerational families not just grow their wealth, but align it with their purpose and help bridge the silent conversations between generations.

We all stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. Now it’s our turn to create something greater for them, for us, and for those yet to come.

Let’s keep showing the world what is possible..even in the impossible.

🌱Legacy Is Built Daily, Not Left Behind

💭 Did you know that $84 trillion will transfer between generations in the next 20 years in what is being dubbed “The Great Wealth Transfer?” Yet we are at risk of seeing 70-90% of inherited wealth disappears by the third generation. The culprit isn’t poor investments or the economy, it’s poor planning and the uncomfortable money conversations we avoid having with our families.

I recently met a client whose family was torn apart after her father’s passing. “We grew up knowing Dad was successful, but we never discussed what that meant,” she told me. Within months, siblings who should have been supporting each other were barely speaking.

Many of us justify our silence as “protection.” We don’t want to “burden” our children or make them feel “entitled.” But what we frame as protection usually masks our own discomfort with money conversations.

The most successful wealth transitions I’ve witnessed don’t start with numbers, they start with stories. They focus on purpose, not just preservation; meaning, not just management.

I dive deeper into transforming these uncomfortable money talks in my latest Wealthought Out, thought-letter, including practical exercises that have helped dozens of families I work with. Read the full article and discover how to protect your family’s legacy through meaningful and transformational conversation.

Thursday Thoughts 💭

💡I had one of those lightbulb moments during my morning meditation today. As I sat there trying to quiet my mind, I was reflecting on how much of my life I’ve spent playing the outer game compared to where the real magic happens in the inner game.

Here’s what hit me: We’re constantly choosing between living with intention or living with expectation. Those choices shape everything.

Living with intention is playing the inner game. It is hard to do because it requires us to stop and be fully present. It asks us too look within ourselves for accountability, answers, inspiration, and motivation. It often forces us to ask, “why am I doing or thinking this?” instead of “what will I get from this?”

Living with expectation, on the other hand, is the external game. I find it often the path of least resistance because we are simply looking to the past for measurement or future outcomes for validation. It’s algorithmic living: “If I do X, then Y should happen.” We’ve all been there, right? That promotion should come after X years. That investment should yield Y return. That relationship should follow Z pattern.

💭 The intangible, unseen aspects of life, the intentions, the presence, the inner work, ultimately bring the highest value to our lives, because no one can truly see it, feel it, or make it happen except for us. Meanwhile, the tangible, measurable outcomes we often chase might give us that quick dopamine hit, but it’s fleeting at best.

The irony isn’t lost on me that as a financial advisor, I work in a world of measurables. But as I have continued to transform my craft through my own personal transformations, the most meaningful client relationships I’ve built aren’t about the numbers, they have been about helping people align their resources with their deeper intentions ~ helping them discover those intentions and breathing life into them.

🤔 What game are you playing most days? Are you living by intention or expectation? And what might shift if you focused more on the inner game?

With purpose,

-Kris

🤔 Are You Chasing Success... Or Is Success Chasing You?

Ever feel like you’re stuck on a never-ending treadmill of achievement? Let’s flip the script on success and happiness! 🔄

💫 Here’s a POWERFUL truth I’ve discovered:
Happiness isn’t the RESULT of success - it’s the FOUNDATION!

🎯 The Success Trap:
• Endless goal-setting without fulfillment
• Always waiting for “the next big win”
• Measuring life through KPIs and metrics
• Living in “not enough” mode

✨ The Happiness-First Revolution:
1. Focus on present joy, not future achievements
2. Measure impact, not just numbers
3. Trust the process (and actually enjoy it!)
4. Use wealth as a tool, not a target
5. Build from purpose, not pressure

💡 PARADIGM SHIFT ALERT:
Instead of asking “How much money do I need?”
Ask: “What life do I want & how can money serve that?”

👉 YOUR CHALLENGE THIS WEEK:
1. List your “I’ll be happy when...” thoughts
2. Find 3 sources of joy in your NOW
3. Take ONE action using your resources for meaning
