💼 Business Owners - Want to Keep More of What You Earn?

Many businesses overpay in taxes—not because they’re doing anything wrong, but because they’re missing proactive planning opportunities.

Here are a few areas that often make a meaningful difference:
✔️ Choosing the right entity structure as your business grows
✔️ Taking full advantage of available deductions and credits
✔️ Timing income and expenses strategically
✔️ Planning throughout the year—not just at filing time

The biggest savings usually come from planning ahead, not last-minute fixes.

📌 If your business has become more profitable or more complex in recent years, it may be time to revisit your tax strategy.

Happy 2026!

With the new year comes different changes in tax laws - here are a description of a few of them for your personal knowledge!

Here’s a high-level overview of some key adjustments:

🔹 Higher Standard Deductions & Brackets
The IRS has increased the standard deduction and adjusted tax brackets for inflation in 2026, meaning more of your income may be shielded from tax. For example, the standard deduction for married couples filing jointly rises to around $32,200, with similar increases for other filing statuses — helping reduce taxable income.

🔹 More Inflation-Adjusted Limits
Other inflation adjustments affect things like:
- Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) exemption amounts
- Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) maximums
- Foreign earned income exclusion limits
These changes help protect taxpayers from “bracket creep” when inflation pushes incomes higher without increasing real purchasing power.

🔹 Many Key Provisions Are Now Extended
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) permanently extended many provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) that were previously set to expire, including:
- Lower individual tax rates
- Higher AMT exemptions
- Elimination of personal exemptions
These extensions mean that some tax benefits people have grown accustomed to will remain in place for now.

🔹 Planning Matters More Than Ever
Between inflation adjustments and law changes, 2026 may present opportunities — or traps — depending on your income, deductions, retirement planning, and other financial decisions.

As tax season approaches, many people focus on filing — but fewer think about planning.

What often gets overlooked is that how income, expenses, and life changes are handled throughout the year can have just as much impact as what shows up on a tax return. Things like side income, business activity, investments, or even changes in employment can quietly affect how much you owe.

The challenge? Many tax-saving opportunities aren’t obvious and don’t come with reminders. They depend on understanding your full financial picture — and knowing which questions to ask before deadlines pass.

If you’ve ever wondered whether there may be ways to reduce your tax bill that you haven’t explored yet, a short conversation can help bring clarity.

Weekend Side Hustle Check

🎨 Is Your Side Gig a Hobby or Business? The IRS Knows the Difference

That Etsy shop or weekend farmers market booth could trigger different tax rules depending on whether the IRS views it as a hobby or legitimate business.

✅ Profit motive matters: Show business intent through business plans, accurate records, and efforts to improve profitability
✅ 3-year profit test: Making profit in 3 of 5 years creates presumption of business (2 of 7 years for horse activities)
✅ Hobby income taxable: Must report all income, but can only deduct expenses up to income amount - no losses allowed
✅ Business losses allowed: Legitimate businesses can deduct losses against other income, reducing overall tax burden
✅ Nine factors examined: IRS looks at time invested, expertise, asset appreciation, success history, and dependence on income

⚠️ Warning: Hobby activities reported on Schedule 1, not Schedule C. You lose self-employment tax deductions and business expense benefits.
👉 Document everything. Keep detailed records showing your profit motive and business-like approach.

💳 Tax Tip Thursday

Tax Hack: Make Year-End Donations Count for 2024
Did you know your charitable gifts can still qualify for this tax year — even if you pay for them next year?
If you charge donations to your credit card by December 31st, they’re deductible for 2024, even if you don’t pay the bill until 2025. The same goes for checks mailed by year-end — as long as they’re postmarked by December 31st, they count!
Don’t miss out on deductions that reward your generosity while reducing your taxable income.
Need help tracking or documenting your charitable contributions? CPA Services of New England can make sure every eligible dollar is accounted for.

Green Energy Savings

⚡ Going Green? Energy Credits Can Save You Thousands on Taxes
Making energy-efficient upgrades to your home or buying an electric vehicle? Uncle Sam will help foot the bill with substantial tax credits.

✅ Heat pumps & HVAC: Get up to $2,000 credit for qualified heat pumps, central air, and biomass stoves/boilers
✅ Home improvements: 30% credit (up to $1,200) for insulation, windows, doors, and energy audits - no lifetime limit
✅ Solar installations: 30% credit with NO cap for solar panels, battery storage, geothermal heat pumps, and wind turbines
✅ Electric vehicles: Up to $7,500 for new EVs, $4,000 for used - income limits apply ($300K married filing jointly)
✅ Fuel cell vehicles: Maximum $4,000 credit for qualified hydrogen fuel cell vehicles

⚠️ Important: EV credits now apply at point of sale as dealer rebates - no waiting until tax time! Income limits strictly enforced.
👉 Plan your upgrades strategically. Some credits expire or phase down after 2025.

Farm Tax Advantages

🚜 Farming Business? Don't Leave Fuel Tax Credits on the Table
If you use vehicles or equipment for farming, you could be missing out on significant fuel tax refunds and deductions worth thousands.

✅ Standard mileage rate: Deduct 70¢ per business mile (2025 rate) for farm vehicles under 14,000 lbs - no depreciation hassles
✅ Actual expense method: Deduct real costs including gas, repairs, insurance, tires, and depreciation for business use percentage
✅ Off-road fuel credits: Claim refunds on fuel taxes for gas/diesel used in tractors, combines, and stationary equipment
✅ Business use percentage: Only track and deduct the portion used for farming - commuting to town doesn't count
✅ Alternative fuels qualify: Biodiesel, ethanol blends, and other alternative fuels used on-farm may qualify for additional credits

⚠️ Record-keeping critical: IRS requires detailed logs showing date, gallons, type of fuel, and specific farming purpose for each use
👉 Substantiate everything. More than 75% business use unlocks accelerated depreciation options.

Business Tax Fundamentals

📋 Misclassifying Workers? It Could Cost You Thousands in Penalties
Getting worker classification wrong isn't just a paperwork issue - it's one of the IRS's top audit triggers with serious financial consequences.

✅ Behavioral control: If you dictate when, where, and how work is done, they're likely an employee, not a contractor
✅ Financial control: Independent contractors invest in their own equipment, have unreimbursed expenses, and can make a profit or loss
✅ Type of relationship: Written contracts help but don't override reality - ongoing, indefinite work suggests employee status
✅ Form SS-8 available: When in doubt, request an IRS determination of worker status (though this may trigger scrutiny)
✅ Safe harbor provision: If you've consistently treated workers as contractors with reasonable basis and filed all 1099s, you may qualify for Section 530 relief

⚠️ Penalty alert: Misclassification can result in back taxes, penalties up to 100% of employment taxes, plus criminal charges for willful violations
👉 Don't guess on classification. The cost of getting it wrong far exceeds the savings.
