If you receive a voicemail like this one claiming to be from an “agency for mediation and tax relief,” do not call back — this is fraud.

The IRS never initiates contact by phone, text, or email about tax bills, refunds, or relief programs. The IRS does not share your tax return, debt, or any other personal details with any third party company.

🚫 Do NOT share personal or financial information.

📞 Hang up or delete the message immediately.

✅ If you’re unsure, contact the IRS directly through their official website: irs.gov.

Stay alert and protect yourself — these scams can sound convincing but are 100% fake.

Unfortunately, identify theft with tax matters is on the rise. 2023 saw a 20% increase in fraudulently submitted tax returns. The following is a list from the IRS of potential red flags indicating your identity has been stolen:
•Tax return rejected
•Form W-2 or Form 1099 from employer you didn’t work for
•Form 1099-G unemployment benefits you didn’t get or apply for
•Employer identification number (EIN) you didn’t apply for
•Unreported income alert, like a CP2000 series notice
•Someone wanting to “help” with your Online Account
•Accounts created or accessed that you didn’t create or access
•Alerts about password resets or log-in verifications
•Data breach leaked your information. Consider filing Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit.
•Social Security account shows wages you didn’t earn or expect

A few reminders-
📍 We have a secure drop box that is available 24/7 All required paperwork is available on our website -lavalleetax.com
📍We prepare tax returns in the order they are received. We cannot prepare a return that is missing documentation.
📍1099’s need to be in the mail by January 31st. Please reach out as soon as you know your totals.
📍Make sure you complete all questions on our engagement form. Failure to to answer each question will delay processing your return.
📍If you’re having trouble remembering what documents you need or if you are unsure please call us @207-798-4808 and we would be happy to assist you.
📍 If you have not received a tax document you were expecting check online portals as many companies have eliminated paper statements and only use a digital format.

A helpful hint to those awaiting tax documents- the IRS allows a digital copy to replace a mailed hard copy. You may be waiting on documents that are no longer coming via mail and are already available to you. In the case of dividends, 1099-Int, and 1099-R simply log into your online account with your brokerage house and locate the “documents” or similar section. Your statments should be located within that section as many institutions are opting for digital copies only. No printer? No problem. Lavalleetax.com has secure file share option right on our home page. You can submit all your digital documents to us securely within minutes.

1099-NEC’s and 1099-MISC have also begun the process of going paperless and hope to be paper free for the 2024 filing year. Stay tuned for updates on what to expect.

A lot of great tax credits have been approved for energy saving home improvements, solar power and Electric Vehicles.

With regard to the home improvements- there are credits for windows, hot water heaters, heat pumps, doors, and much much more. However, because it is "energy saving" does not automatically mean it qualifies for tax credit. Before you purchase we strongly advise checking out https://www.energystar.gov/productfinder/ to confirm that the make and model number you are interested in meets the requirements for a tax credit.
