“Well folks, the IRS has officially packed up its pencils and gone home. Shutdown mode activated. Live support? Gone. Paper processing? LOL. Audit responses? Might as well send a carrier pigeon. The agency that wants your money yesterday is now ghosting you like a bad Tinder date. Employees got Reduction in Force notices, which is government-speak for “we’re not paying you, but please pretend to work.” Meanwhile, e-file systems are still chugging along like nothing happened, because apparently robots don’t need lunch breaks.

So what do we tell clients? “Yes, the IRS is closed. No, your deadline is not extended. Yes, penalties still apply. No, you cannot speak to a human. Yes, we’re still expected to fix everything. No, we don’t have a magic wand. Yes, we’re screaming internally.”

Honestly, what do they want us to do—channel spirits? Read tea leaves? Summon the ghost of Ogden’s mailroom? We’ll keep monitoring, translating, and pretending this is normal. Hang in there, fellow tax wranglers. We’re all in this absurdity together.”

The IRS has announced that paper tax refund checks for individual taxpayers will be phased out beginning September 30. Payments are next—but there is some breathing room.
