When did your firm last raise rates?

For a lot of firms, the honest answer is "longer ago than it should have been."

The conversation is uncomfortable. So it keeps getting postponed. Meanwhile the work gets harder and the margins get thinner.

How do you think about pricing at your firm — is it something you revisit regularly or does it tend to just stay where it landed?

Scope creep is one of those things that's almost never the client's fault.

They asked for one thing. You said yes. Then they asked for a small thing related to it. You said yes. Then another small thing. And now you're doing something substantially different from what was originally agreed, for the same fee.

The accountants who handle this well catch it early and name it directly. Not defensively — just matter-of-factly. "That's outside what we scoped, here's what adding it would cost."

The ones who struggle tend to keep saying yes until the resentment builds up.

Be honest - how much of your firm's operations lives in email threads?

Client decisions buried in reply-alls. Approvals nobody can find. Context that exists in one person's inbox and nowhere else.

It's not laziness. It's just what happens when email is the fastest tool available and the alternative is a system nobody quite trusts.

Delivering bad news to a client is one of those skills accounting programs don't teach.

The best accountants I've seen do it the same way: they lead with the facts, they don't apologize for the facts, and they come with an option or two already thought through.

"Here's what I found. Here's what it means. Here's what I'd suggest we do about it."

The accountants who struggle with this tend to either soften the news so much it doesn't register — or drop it without context and let the client spiral.

Neither serves anyone well.
