A wonderful experience to celebrate all the winners of the Boone Chamber of Commerce Businesses of the Year!

On behalf of Appalachian State University, I was honored to accept the 2025 Watauga County Large Business of the Year Award at the 2026 High Country Economic Kickoff Luncheon, hosted by the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce, Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce and the Watauga Economic Development Commission on Jan. 15. In this photo, taken by App State alumna and freelance photographer Martha McGougan ’22, I’m accepting the award from local business owner and event sponsor Collette Woodruff, PC.

I greatly appreciate this recognition by the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business Development Committee and accepted this award on behalf of the 21,798 students at App State — 18,000 of whom live in the Boone area and contribute to the local economy; the more than 3,600 faculty and staff, who live and work in the High Country; the more than 150,000 alumni, 75% of whom live and contribute to their communities across the state of North Carolina; and the many leaders who have come before me — especially our founders, B.B., D.D. and Lillie Shull Dougherty, whose bold vision of educational access and student success continues to guide us.

More than 126 years ago, Boone community members provided funding and supplies to build our very first living and learning spaces. Through prosperity and extreme challenges, we have remained linked, and I am incredibly grateful to be part of this strong legacy of collaboration, which was built on the noble ambition of serving the people of this region. I look forward to being part of a future in which we continue to build on this extraordinary partnership in new ways — to shape an even brighter, more resilient, enterprising and robust future for our region. Thank you to the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce for recognizing Appalachian State University with this distinguished honor.

We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Bookkeeper to join our team. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who possesses a strong understanding of financial concepts and demonstrates proficiency in using Quickbooks Online. This hire will be responsible for managing day-to-day bookkeeping activities, maintaining accurate financial records, and supporting our accountants and CPAs in preparing client reports and filings.


Requirements
-Minimum experience of 3-5 years using Quickbooks Online is required.
-Proven experience in accounting roles with a strong understanding of financial concepts.
-Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills for effective report writing and mentoring.
-Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.

Hello to all,

We want to take this opportunity to extend some heartfelt words of encouragement to all of you who have been impacted by Hurricane Helene in the Carolina mountains and surrounding regions. Each and every one of you has been on our minds over this trying time and we want you to know that you are in our thoughts as you navigate next steps and begin to rebuild.

If you filed an extension for your individual tax return, the due date for those returns is now May 1, 2025.

We have received many phone calls and emails about applying for FEMA assistance or federal funding through obtaining an SBA Disaster loan, and we are here to help you navigate that process if you have any questions or concerns. Also, if you know of others in the community that were affected by the storm that need help in this arena, please send them to us. We are offering this assistance free of charge for anyone in need. As of today, the application deadline to apply for FEMA assistance is Wednesday, November 27th. The deadline at this time to apply for SBA Disaster funding (in the form of a loan) is Monday, December 2nd.

We strongly encourage those of you who operate small businesses to consider the long-term impacts of this disaster on your ability to maintain the revenue streams you need. If you expect you may experience long-term changes to your revenue, supply chain issues, increases to product costs, reductions in customer volume/support, reduction in available workforce, a drop in rental activities, etc., you may want to consider looking into the options for funding available through the SBA.

Our office will be operating under our normal business hours of 9am-4pm, Monday-Friday. We are here to support you in the next phases of this journey of rebuilding. We look at this as an opportunity to build a stronger, more cohesive community as we are all facing these new challenges together. We are .

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

In 1924, Ethel Watts paved the way for thousands of women by becoming the first woman to qualify as an accountant. Nineteen years after Ethel Watts broke gender barriers, in 1943, Mary T. Washington broke racial barriers by becoming the first black female to become a CPA and the thirteenth black CPA in the United States. Which lead the way for Women like us!

This International Women’s Day, we are taking a moment to reflect on the barriers still to be tackled and to celebrate some of the great women leaders that have influenced us and so many others to do more as a leader.

International Women’s Day is the perfect occasion to celebrate not only female leaders, but diversity and inclusion generally. By encouraging more diverse representation in accounting, the industry will only become stronger. Of course, this applies to other sectors as well.

Today, women make up more than 50% of accounting graduates entering the profession but only 19% of the partners in accounting firms nationwide.

We believe we all have the potential to excel and lead if provided appropriate support and opportunity. But it all begins by believing in yourself. If you can’t envision your own success, it makes it that much harder for others to see it. Peel away the layers of doubt and fear holding you back and don’t be afraid to make mistakes.

Any day of the year makes for a perfect opportunity to support and celebrate the women in your life. However, March 8th marks a very important day, International Women’s Day!

Let’s honor and respect every woman who has played their part to make the world as wonderful as it is now. Happy International Women’s Day to everyone.

Don’t forget that no matter where you are or what you are doing, you are strong, intelligent, and loved by the women around you.
