Most discussions about selling a business revolve around valuation, negotiations, and deal structure.

Those are important conversations. But in my experience, they’re not always the hardest ones.

For many owners, a business represents years of sacrifice, relationships, purpose, and identity. Stepping away can bring excitement and opportunity, but it can also create uncertainty in ways that aren’t often discussed.

The article below explores the emotional side of business ownership transitions and why preparing for what comes after the sale is just as important as preparing the business itself.

Ask a business owner what their company sold for and they’ll give you one number. Ask them what they actually walked away with — after debt payoff, taxes, the working capital adjustment, and the seller note that’s still being paid down — and you’ll get a very different answer, usually accompanied by a story.

Many owners spend time thinking about what multiple their business might sell for.

What receives less attention is why some businesses earn stronger multiples than others in the first place.

In my experience, premium valuations are rarely driven by industry alone. They're often the result of years of preparation: building systems, reducing owner dependency, strengthening leadership, improving financial clarity, and creating predictable results.

Buyers aren't simply evaluating where a business is today. They're evaluating how confidently they can step into its future.

The article below explores several characteristics that businesses with stronger valuations tend to have in common.

Many business owners assume buyers focus primarily on revenue and profitability.

Those factors matter, but they’re often not what determines whether a buyer moves forward — or how much they’re willing to pay.

Experienced buyers spend a significant amount of time evaluating risk. They look at owner dependency, financial clarity, customer concentration, operational systems, and how transferable the business will be after the transition.

What’s interesting is that many of these risks are invisible to the owner because they’ve become part of the day-to-day reality of running the business.

The article below explores several of the hidden risks buyers often see that sellers miss — and why addressing them early can strengthen both value and buyer confidence.

One of the most interesting conversations I have with business owners is about value.

Not because valuation is complicated, but because owners and buyers often view the same business through very different lenses.

Owners naturally see the years of effort, sacrifice, relationships, and risk that went into building the company. Buyers tend to focus on something else entirely: future cash flow, transferability, and perceived risk.

That difference in perspective can create surprises — both positive and negative.

The article below explores why many business owners don't have a clear understanding of what their business would actually command in today's market, and why knowing your value is important long before you're ready to sell.
