We always love looking over the fence and seeing what the neighbors got going on, don't we? They have a sweet new Bronco, an in-ground pool, and a sick man cave.

We do that with our businesses as well. Look at that new 2023 F-250 Bob bought for his business. Look at how many employees Jill has working for her. We see them, we look at business, and we start comparing what we have to what they have....let's stop comparing.

First, it does not help us reach our goals. Spending time worrying about someone else keeps us from focusing on our business's growth. Keep your business your main business.

Also, not everything is as good on the inside as it looks on the outside. Your neighbors could have a mountain of debt that keeps them stressed about how to make the next payment. Bob's new F250 could stretch his business so thin that he can't invest in advertising to see more company growth. Just because it LOOKS good does mean that it IS good.

Stop comparing, start building.

I am a VERY impatient person. I want what I want and I want it NOW. However, I have been learning, sometimes painfully, that owning a business takes patients.

It takes patience to have a vision of what the business could become, but taking your time to get there. It takes patience to see your company growing, but at what feels like a snails pace. However, long-term slower growth could lead your company to a better long term goal.

Compare that to a maple tree seed. The maple tree seed takes 3-4 MONTHS to germinate and even longer to start growing to any size. While a few-month-old maple tree is easy to pull up....just give it a year or two. The maple tree establishes deep roots, that anchor and nourishes the tree for decades to come.

How much does your business have set back for a "rainy day?"

One of the things that businesses learned during the pandemic was that rainy days will most likely happen to your business. A major client backs out, a major repair is needed, a global pandemic comes through, or a recession hits. You name it. There are a zillion factors that can lead to a rainy day.

How has your business planned for a rainy day? I like to advise my business clients to have 2 months (at a minimum) of operating expenses in the bank as a rainy day fund. Ideally, this would be more along the Dave Ramsey approach of 3-6 months, but 2 months is a good starting point.

Before you cash out owner's draws, before you buy the new company truck "you just got to have," and before you make a major addition to your business, set back 2 months worth of operating expenses for a rainy day.

This total will be different for each business, but look to hit that mark, at a minimum.

The IRS has really been keeping good tabs on those payroll tax penalties lately. In the last year I have seen WAY more penalties for errors and late filing of payroll tax liabilities. And those penalties are STEEP.

Millions of people in the U.S. are living well ABOVE their means, when we should be striving to live BELOW our means. The amount of debt the average American carries has skyrocketed, in large part to the idea of "more is better."

Keeping up with "the Jones's" has become synonymous with the American dream, but has led many to the American nightmare! As a business owner, this same tendency happens as well.

I need the nicest company car because company X has that type of car. I need to have the latest and greatest phone because it looks great. I want to take this trip or buy this thing instead of investing back into the business.

As a business owner keep the end goal in mind. What are you trying to reach? What type of growth do you want to see? Then as your "means" increase so can your spending. (Short-term pain for long-term gain) Fight against the materialistic mindset we are surrounded with and fight to live a life free from debt and burden.

Live below your means.
