No Paper Checks After Sept. 30

The IRS and Treasury have just announced that, starting September 30, 2025, most federal payments will no longer be delivered by paper check. This includes benefits checks, such as Social Security and veterans’ payments. For the majority of taxpayers who’re already receiving funds electronically, nothing changes. But now's the time to act for those still getting paper checks.

There are three easy ways to make the switch:

Enroll in direct deposit through the issuing agency; details are available online
Sign up via GoDirect.gov
Apply for the Direct Express® Debit Mastercard®, ideal for folks without bank accounts, by calling 1-800-967-6857
This change isn’t just about convenience: electronic payments are faster, more secure, and less prone to theft or fraud. As tax professionals, let’s help our clients switch before those paper checks disappear.
