The CARES Act allows for a Paycheck Protection Loan for small businesses.

The loan amount is based on average monthly payroll costs. Generally, indebtedness under this program is forgiven in an amount (not exceeding the principal amount of the loan) equal to the following costs made during the covered period:

o Payroll
o Interest payments on mortgages
o Rent
o Utility payments

Loan forgiveness is reduced for any reductions in employees or reductions in wages.

The loans can be obtained through the SBA and Treasury approved banks, credit unions, and some nonbank lenders. We strongly recommend contacting your representative at the bank where you currently have a relationship to determine if they are providing these loans and how to begin the process for applying for these loans.

Clients and Friends:

Today the IRS announced that the normal filing deadline of April 15th will be delayed until July 15th due to the impacts of the Coronavirus on our economy and society. Earlier this week, the IRS had already extended the time for payment of taxes until July 15th, and waived interest and penalties for the 3-month delay. As a side note, they did not waive interest and penalties for underpayments up to April 15th.

DLHC is continuing to work on all tax returns as they come in, and we will continue to do so until further notice. We know that many of you will be getting refunds, and we will be here to process those returns so that you can get your refunds as soon as possible. Even if you know that you are not getting a refund, we encourage you to bring in your tax information so that we may determine how much you may owe, to give you an idea of your future cash requirements.

The Coronavirus Payment Relief includes:

Individuals: Income tax payment deadlines for individual returns, with a due date of April 15, 2020, are being automatically extended until July 15, 2020, for up to $1 million of their 2019 tax due. This payment relief applies to all individual returns, including self-employed individuals, and all entities other than C-Corporations, such as trusts or estates. IRS will automatically provide this relief to taxpayers. Taxpayers do not need to file any additional forms or call the IRS to qualify for this relief.

Corporations: For C Corporations, income tax payment deadlines are being automatically extended until July 15, 2020, for up to $10 million of their 2019 tax due.

This relief also includes estimated tax payments for tax year 2020 that are due on April 15, 2020.

Penalties and interest will begin to accrue on any remaining unpaid balances as of July 16, 2020.

This relief only applies to federal income tax (including tax on self-employment income) payments otherwise due April 15, 2020, or deposits or payments of any other type of federal tax.
The State of Alabama has indicated they would follow the federal announcement on these matters.

As a reminder, we are following practices recommended by the CDC and limiting exposure to the transmission of this virus by closing our doors to the public. We have a drop box in the downstairs lobby of our building, so if you bring your tax information to us, please use that drop box. Our lobby will be open from 7 AM to 7 PM Monday through Friday, and 9 AM to 1 PM on Saturday. Of course you can either use mail or email to transmit your documents as well.

Please contact your tax advisor if you have any questions or would like further information.

We are certainly going through unprecedented times with the spread of the Coronavirus, and the impact it has had on our economy and everyday life. In response to the threat of this pandemic, and in compliance with the recommendation of the CDC and other health organizations, DLHC has decided to implement various measures to protect the health and well-being of our staff, clients and community.

Beginning on Thursday March 19th, we will be closing our offices in order to limit exposure to, and the spread of this virus. Even though our office doors will be closed, we will continue to work remotely, and we will continue to be in contact with you through electronic means and telephone. In addition, if you have your tax information ready to process, you may leave these documents, or any other correspondence, in our secure dropbox in the downstairs lobby.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to our staff for further information. We will continue to monitor email and voicemail, and will be in contact with you to ensure that the high level of service that you have come to expect will continue during these next few weeks and months.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during this disruption, and we hope that you and your family remain safe and healthy.
