2024 tax filing season set for January 29; IRS continues to make improvements to help taxpayers

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced Monday, Jan. 29, 2024, as the official start date of the nation's 2024 tax season when the agency will begin accepting and processing 2023 tax returns.

The IRS expects more than 128.7 million individual tax returns to be filed by the April 15, 2024, tax deadline.

Although the IRS will not officially begin accepting and processing tax returns until Jan. 29, people do not need to wait until then to work on their taxes if they're using software companies or tax professionals. For example, most software companies accept electronic submissions and then hold them until the IRS is ready to begin processing later this month. IRS Free File will also be available on IRS.gov starting Jan. 12 in advance of the filing season opening. The IRS Direct File pilot will be rolled out in phases as final testing is completed and is expected to be widely available in mid-March to eligible taxpayers in the participating states.

Taxpayers will continue to see helpful changes at the IRS following ongoing transformation work. Building off the success of the 2023 tax season that saw significant improvements following passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, the 2024 filing season will continue reflecting the focus on improving services to taxpayers.

"As our transformation efforts take hold, taxpayers will continue to see marked improvement in IRS operations in the upcoming filing season," said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. "IRS employees are working hard to make sure that new funding is used to help taxpayers by making the process of preparing and filing taxes easier."

Some of the new and expanded tools and resources include:

Expanded in-person service that meets taxpayers where they are by opening or reopening Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs). The IRS will also offer extended hours at many TACs nationwide.
Increased help available on the toll-free line and an expanded customer call back feature designed to significantly reduce wait times.
Improvements to the Where's My Refund? tool, which is the IRS' most widely used taxpayer service tool. However, the tool provides limited information, often leading taxpayers to call the IRS to inquire about their refund status. Updates to Where's My Refund? will allow taxpayers to see more detailed refund status messages in plain language. These updates will also ensure Where's My Refund works seamlessly on mobile devices. Taxpayers often see a generic message stating that their returns are still being processed and to check back later. With the improvements, taxpayers will see clearer and more detailed updates, including whether the IRS needs them to respond to a letter requesting additional information. The new updates will reduce the need for taxpayers to call the IRS for answers to basic questions.
Enhanced paperless processing that will enable taxpayers to submit all correspondence, non-tax forms, and responses to notices digitally and will be able to e-File 20 additional tax forms. Achieving this milestone will enable up to 125 million paper documents to be submitted digitally per year.
An enhanced IRS Individual Online Account that includes chat, the option to schedule and cancel future payments, revise payment plans and validate and save bank accounts.
A new, pilot tax filing service called Direct File that gives eligible taxpayers a new choice to file their 2023 federal tax returns online, for free, directly with the IRS. It will be rolled out in phases and is expected to be widely available in mid-March. Find more about Direct File pilot eligibility, scope and the participating states on Direct File.

April 15 tax filing deadline for most taxpayers
For most taxpayers, the deadline to file their personal federal tax return, pay any tax owed or request an extension to file is Monday, April 15, 2024.

Steps you can take now to make tax filing easier in 2022

View your account information online

Use online account to securely access the latest information available about your federal tax account and see information from your most recently filed tax return on IRS.gov.

You can:

View the amounts of the Economic Impact Payments you received
Access Child Tax Credit Update portal for information about advance Child Tax Credit payments
View key data from your most recent tax return and access additional records and transcripts
View details of your payment plan if you have one
View 5 years of payment history and any pending or scheduled payments
Act now if you need to create an account.

Gather and organize your tax records

Organized tax records make preparing a complete and accurate tax return easier. It helps you avoid errors that lead to processing delays that slow your refund and may also help you find overlooked deductions or credits.

Wait to file until you have your tax records including:

Forms W-2 from your employer(s)
Forms 1099 from banks, issuing agencies and other payers including unemployment compensation, dividends, distributions from a pension, annuity or retirement plan
Form 1099-K, 1099-MISC, W-2 or other income statement if you worked in the gig economy
Form 1099-INT if you were paid interest
Other income documents and records of virtual currency transactions
Form 1095-A, Health Insurance Marketplace Statement, to reconcile advance Premium Tax Credits for Marketplace coverage
Letter 6419, 2021 Total Advance Child Tax Credit Payments to reconcile your advance Child Tax Credit payments
Letter 6475, Your 2021 Economic Impact Payment, to determine whether you're eligible to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit
Notify the IRS if your address changes and notify the Social Security Administration of a legal name change.

Remember, most income is taxable. This includes:

unemployment income,
refund interest,
income from the gig economy, and
virtual currencies.
Check your Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN)

An ITIN only needs to be renewed if it has expired and is needed on a U.S. federal tax return.

If your ITIN wasn't included on a U.S. federal tax return at least once for tax years 2018, 2019, and 2020, your ITIN will expire on December 31, 2021.

As a reminder, ITINs with middle digits 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, or 88 have expired. In addition, ITINs with middle digits 90, 91, 92, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, or 99, IF assigned before 2013, have expired. If you previously submitted a renewal application and it was approved, you do not need to renew again.

Make sure you've withheld enough tax

Consider adjusting your withholding if you owed taxes or received a large refund last year. Changing your withholding can help you avoid a tax bill or let you keep more money each payday. Life changes – getting married or divorced, welcoming a child, or taking on a second job - may also mean changing withholding.

Use the Tax Withholding Estimator to help you determine the right amount of tax to have withheld from your paycheck. This tool on IRS.gov will help determine if you need to adjust your withholding and submit a new Form W-4 to your employer.

Consider estimated tax payments. If you receive a substantial amount of non-wage income like self-employment income, investment income, taxable Social Security benefits and in some instances, pension and annuity income you should make quarterly estimated tax payments, with the last payment for 2021 due on January 18, 2022.

Log in to your online account to make a payment online or go to IRS.gov/payments.

Get banked to speed tax refunds with direct deposit

The fastest way for you to get your tax refund is by filing electronically and choosing direct deposit.

Direct deposit gives you access to your refund faster than a paper check. Don't have a bank account? Learn how to open an account at an FDIC-Insured bank or through the National Credit Union Locator Tool.

If you are a Veteran, see the Veterans Benefits Banking Program (VBBP) for access to financial services at participating banks.

Eight out of 10 taxpayers get their refunds by using direct deposit. The IRS uses the same electronic transfer system to deposit tax refunds that is used by other federal agencies to deposit nearly 98% of all Social Security and Veterans Affairs benefits into millions of accounts.

Direct deposit also avoids the possibility that a refund check could be lost or stolen or returned to the IRS as undeliverable. And it saves taxpayer money. It costs more than $1 for every paper refund issued, but only a dime for each direct deposit.

Here’s what to know ahead of tax season if you got child tax credit payments in 2021

Families who received child tax credit advance payments will need to compare the amount they received with the amount “that they can properly claim on their 2021 tax return,” the IRS said. Parents who received less than the amount for which they are eligible will claim a credit for the remaining amount when they file their 2021 income taxes. Those who received more may be required to repay some or all of the “excess payment” when they file their taxes. Most people who will need to repay part of the child tax credit payments will be able to “satisfy that balance through a reduction in their expected federal income tax refund,” the IRS said. “In January 2022, the IRS will send Letter 6419 with the total amount of advance child tax credit payments taxpayers received in 2021,” the IRS said. “People should keep this and any other IRS letters about advance Child Tax Credit payments with their tax records.” Eligible families who didn’t receive monthly payments, including those who don’t normally file a tax return, can claim the child tax credit as a lump-sum payment when they file their 2021 taxes.

WHY PARENTS NEED TO CHECK THEIR PAYMENTS:
The child tax credit payments families received were based on IRS estimates of their eligibility in 2021. It used parents’ 2020 tax returns, or 2019 returns if they weren’t available, to determine eligibility for the credit. But things may have changed in 2021 that could affect how much families are owed, including an increase in income, a change in filing status or changes in the number of qualifying children living in the home. “As a result of these types of ordinary family and life changes, you may receive a total amount of advance child tax credit payments that exceeds the amount of Child Tax Credit that you properly are allowed on your 2021 tax return,” the IRS said.

STIMULUS CHECKS:

Those who were not eligible for the third round of stimulus checks, worth up to $1,400, and those who did not receive the full amount may be able to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit based on their 2021 tax information. “Individuals will also need the amount of their third Economic Impact Payment and any Plus-Up Payments received to calculate their correct 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit amount when they file their tax return,” the IRS said. “Ensuring they use the correct payment amounts will help them avoid a processing delay that may slow their refund.” The agency will send out letters in 2022 with “the total amount of the third Economic Impact Payment and any Plus-Up Payments received.”

IRS opens 2019 tax filing season for individual filers on Jan. 27

WASHINGTON ― The Internal Revenue Service confirmed that the nation’s tax season will start for individual tax return filers on Monday, Jan. 27, 2020, when the tax agency will begin accepting and processing 2019 tax year returns.

The deadline to file 2019 tax returns and pay any tax owed is Wednesday, April 15, 2020. More than 150 million individual tax returns for the 2019 tax year are expected to be filed, with the vast majority of those coming before the traditional April tax deadline.

“As we enter the filing season, taxpayers should know that the dedicated workforce of the IRS stands ready to help,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “We encourage taxpayers to plan ahead and use the tools and information available on IRS.gov. The IRS and the nation's tax community are committed to making this another smooth filing season."

The IRS set the Jan. 27 opening date to ensure the security and readiness of key tax processing systems and to address the potential impact of recent tax legislation on 2019 tax returns.
