Did you remember to turn your clocks back this weekend? ⏰

Many people use the time change as a reminder to test smoke detectors and replace batteries. Here are a few financial housekeeping items to add to the list:

🔑 Update your passwords, especially for financial accounts.

📇 Confirm your emergency contacts are current with your bank, financial accounts, and doctors.

🗂️ Make sure a trusted person knows how to find your important documents.

📬 Review your credit report for anything unfamiliar. It’s free at annualcreditreport.com.

None of these take long, and they can save headaches later. Enjoy the extra hour of sleep!

Financial Planning Month wraps up this week, but the questions it raises don’t have an expiration date.

Earlier this month we suggested looking at the whole picture. If you did, great. If it’s still on your to-do list, you’re in good company.

Here’s a simple way to start: pick one thing.

📄 Pull out your beneficiary forms and review them.

📅 Note your year-end deadlines on the calendar.

💬 Have one conversation with your family about where important documents are kept.

A plan doesn’t have to be finished in a month. It just has to keep moving. If you have questions, we’re here to help.

Andrew, Ethan, and Joel spent a few days volunteering with Junior Achievement in Mrs. Murphy’s class at Pleasant Valley High School, helping students prepare for the JA Stock Market Challenge.

They covered the basics of personal investing and talked about the biggest advantage every student in the room already has: time! Along with the fundamentals, they shared tips for the quick thinking the students would need on challenge day, when they’d have only seconds to react as the market moved.

On challenge day, students from schools across the area formed teams of three or four. Each team built a portfolio of fictional companies and got a taste of a day on Wall Street, complete with an opening bell and all the fast-paced energy of a trading floor.

Thank you to Junior Achievement and to Mrs. Murphy for having us!

We asked our advisor, Andrew M. Swanson, MS, CFP - “What’s the estate planning oversight you see most at every age of life?”

Here’s what we generally see at each stage:

👶 Early career or younger families: No will or named guardian for minor children, and no powers of attorney or healthcare directive in place.

💼 Mid-career: Beneficiary designations on 401(k)s and life insurance that were never updated after a marriage, divorce, or a child’s birth.

🏡 Pre-retirement and post- retirement: A will or trust that hasn’t been reviewed in years, assets titled in a way that doesn’t match the plan, and no one who knows where the documents are kept.

Which stage are you in? A quick review now can generally help make sure your plan does what you intended, depending on your state’s rules.

Laws vary by state, and you should consult an estate attorney for legal advice.

It’s National Estate Planning Awareness Week, and estate planning isn’t just for retirees.

If you’re raising a family or building your career, the most important documents are often the ones people skip:

→ A will that names a guardian for your children
→ Powers of attorney and a healthcare directive, in case you can’t make decisions yourself
→ Up-to-date beneficiaries on your 401(k) and life insurance through your employer.

If you’re retired, the question is usually whether your plan still fits:

→ When did you last review your will or trust?
→ Do your beneficiary designations still reflect your wishes? They generally override your will, so they should be reviewed alongside the rest of your plan.
→ Does someone you trust know where everything is?

At every stage, an outdated plan can create the confusion it was meant to prevent. We can help you coordinate your financial plan with your estate plan, working with your estate attorney where appropriate.

Laws vary by state and you should consult an estate attorney for legal advice.

It's that time of year again: pumpkin spice, falling leaves, and… open enrollment! 🍂📋

I know, not the most exciting part of fall. But a quick check now can save you some headaches (and possibly money) later.

On Medicare? Open Enrollment runs Oct 15 to Dec 7. Plans change every year, so make sure your meds are still covered, and your favorite doctors are still in network.

Covered through work? Before you hit "keep everything the same," take a quick look at:

✔️ Your health plan. If you’re considering a high-deductible health plan, is pairing it with an HSA a better fit for you?

✔️ Life and disability coverage, especially if your family has grown.

✔️ Your retirement contributions. Getting your full available employer match = free money! 💰

These choices affect your taxes, savings, and budget for next year, so they're worth a few minutes.

October is Financial Planning Month!

It's a good reason to ask a simple question: When was the last time you looked at your whole financial picture?

Not just your investment accounts, but everything together. Your income, taxes, health care, beneficiaries, and what you want the next chapter to look like.

Plans are made at one point in time, but life keeps moving. Here are a few questions worth asking this month:

✔️ Has anything changed this year? A retirement, a move, a new grandchild, a health change, or a loss in the family.

✔️ Are your beneficiary designations still up to date?

✔️ Do you know your year-end deadlines for distributions, conversions, and charitable gifts?

✔️ Does your family know where your important documents are?

Making changes to your financial plan can have tax implications, affect your cash flow, and may involve costs. But addressing gaps now can help protect your family and align your plan with your current situation.

If any of those gave you pause, that's normal. Ready for a financial review? Let's talk.
