Our reward for making it through another tax season. A carrot cake from the sweet elephant. I’m a huuuge carrot cake fan, tried hundreds. Lauren’s is the bestest 😁

Also a huge thank you for everyone bearing with us as we dealt with the first normal tax season in 2 years minus the 4 weeks of colds/flus/ear infections the family went though in March.

04/19/2022

We will be moving to a different location this weekend. If you are planning on sending in any mail or stopping by, please hold off until Monday. We will update the new address once we are moved in.

We are finding a lot of discrepancies between what the IRS says people received as stimulus or child tax credit payments and what we are being told. I am asking that you create an IRS account via the link below and download your stimulus and child tax letters and include them with documents that you send. This will shorten the process to file your return instead of waiting for me to ask. If you have any questions, please let me know at [email protected]

I hope everyone is having a happy holiday! As the year ends, I wanted to remind everyone that the IRS is allowing a $300 (single)/$600 (married) top line deduction for monetary donations in 2021. This means that if you do not itemize, you can still take a charitable deduction up to $600 on your tax return. The donation has to be completed by December 31st to count.

Attention all Clarke County Food & Beverage Establishments! Clarke County's 2% Food & Beverage Tax was approved earlier this year and officially went into effect on July 1st.

Berryville businesses (which already assess a 4% meals tax) do NOT need to assess this tax. There is also a specific exclusion for food sold at farmers' markets and roadside stands.

Expanded child tax credit summary:

In 2021, the IRS will be direct depositing or mailing out, starting July 15th, an advance of the child tax credit. If you are eligible, instead of the standard $2,000 per child, you may get as much as $3,600 per child under 6, or $3,000 for children 6 through 17.

Here is more information: https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/advance-child-tax-credit-payments-in-2021

The caveat to this is that this is an advance of the credit that you normally get at tax filing time. As an example based on 2020 numbers, if you have 2 children, you would get a $4,000 tax credit. In this example, let's say your total federal tax is $10,000, and you had $8,000 withheld from paychecks. If you include the credit, the math is -10,000 + 8,0000 + 4,000 (child tax credit) = 2,000. You would get a refund from the IRS for $2,000.

In 2021 the IRS is going to send you the value of the credit over the course of the year. So let's use the same example but apply 2021's rules. -10,000 (taxes owed) + 8,000 (withheld from paychecks) = -2,000. You owe the IRS $2,000. The difference is that the IRS already sent you the value of the credit ahead of time.

The important piece to take away from this is to take a look at your 2020 tax return, see if you received a refund and how the child tax credit affected your return. Then determine if you are okay spending your child credit as you receive it or savings it to eventually pay part of it back to the IRS.

Please excuse any grammatical errors!!

PSA:

We wanted to update people on a potential tax strategy for the 2021 filing season. Congress is currently debating a third round of stimulus payments. We currently do not know income limits or rules around the qualifications for the next payment, but there is a potential strategy to maximize your payment. Each prior payment was based on whichever tax return the IRS had on file for you, either your 2018 or 2019 return. Whichever had the higher Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) was used to determine your qualification for the payment.

As an example, if the cut off for a stimulus check was 150k as a married couple. And your AGI in 2018 was 160k and your AGI in 2019 was 130k, the IRS would use the 130k number since you filed and it was within the limits to receive a payment. If you had not filed your 2019 taxes yet, they would of used the 2018 number, and you would not have received your check. This would of been sorted out via your tax return filing in 2020, but you would be waiting months to finally get the check.

Since we do not yet know the rules for the new stimulus check, we are recommending strategically filing or not filing your 2020 tax return depending on what your AGI may be and what your AGI was in 2019. The strategy will be to hold off filing your 2020 return until the rules of the new stimulus are finalized. Depending on the rules and timing, we may consider filing immediately or filing an extension to maximize the potential stimulus check.

We will be working with each of our tax preparation clients to make sure that you can receive the maximum stimulus check if we can qualify you via tax preparation strategy.
