Planning tip for 2026 - keep track of your charitable donations made this year! There's an "above the line" deduction of $1,000 for single filers or $2,000 for married filers for charitable donations made to qualified 501(c)(3) organizations. This means that even if you use the Standard Deduction, you could deduct charitable donations.

This is only for donations made in cash/ check/ credit card - not donations of "stuff" like food donations to a food pantry.

USPS POSTMARK CHANGES ARE NOW IN EFFECT
Dates on mail now reflect when it’s processed by the Postal Service, not when it’s dropped off. This a shift that could affect whether time-sensitive mail is considered on time, including IRS filings, Social Security & Medicare documents, and mail-in voting ballots.

If you typically wait until the day before your tax deadline to mail your return, you might want to rethink simply slipping it into a mailbox or post office receptacle. Instead, consider taking it inside the post office and choosing one of these in-person options to document that it was in USPS’ hands ahead of a deadline:
> Request a manual postmark (also called a local postmark) to ensure the date matches when your item was accepted.
> Send by registered or certified mail, methods that provide mailing receipts and tracking.
> Get a certificate of mailing. This works like a receipt, providing official proof of when an item was sent. Keep your copy; the USPS does not retain one. When it comes to meeting mailing deadlines, bear in mind that certificates of mailing do not provide tracking and, for some government institutions, do not override the postmark on the envelope.

In many situations, you can submit timely paperwork online and eliminate the worry of mailing (taxes, Social Security, Medicare all have online websites). For mail-in voting, plan to send your ballot well in advance of Election Day or use options like election drop boxes or hand delivery at election offices (per your local rules).

When making any tax payment online, be sure to keep/ print/ pdf a copy of the confirmation of the payment! You still need to have proof of payment, even when making it electronically.
