💥 Tax Deductions & Write-Offs Every Travel Agent Should Know (Many Don’t!) 💥
Hey travel pros! As a certified tax preparer, I see SO many travel agents leaving money on the table because they don’t realize what they can deduct. Here’s a list of deductions that might shock you—and could save you hundreds or even thousands each year:
1️⃣ Travel-Related Expenses
✔️ FAM Trips & Site Inspections – Costs for trips to learn about resorts, cruises, or destinations are fully deductible as long as you use the knowledge to book clients.
✔️ Airfare, Hotels, & Meals – If it’s business-related, these are write-offs. Even if you combine business & personal travel, you can deduct the portion that’s business.
✔️ Transportation – Uber, Lyft, taxis, or rental cars used for business counts.
2️⃣ Office & Work-From-Home Expenses
✔️ Home Office – A portion of your rent/mortgage, utilities, internet, and insurance. Even a small corner of a room qualifies if used regularly for work.
✔️ Supplies & Equipment – Computers, phones, printers, office furniture, paper, pens—if it’s used for your business, it’s deductible.
✔️ Software & Subscriptions – Booking software, CRM platforms, Zoom, Canva, scheduling tools, and even Canva Pro for creating content.
3️⃣ Marketing & Advertising
✔️ Social media ads, boosted posts, business cards, flyers, websites, and email marketing platforms—all fully deductible.
✔️ Branded giveaways or promotional items for clients count too!
4️⃣ Education & Professional Development
✔️ Training courses, certifications, seminars, webinars—anything that improves your skills or keeps your certifications current.
✔️ Travel-related workshops and conferences also qualify.
5️⃣ Client-Related Expenses
✔️ Client gifts, meals, or entertainment for relationship-building (up to IRS limits).
✔️ Booking client excursions, events, or special experiences can sometimes be partially deductible if you use the knowledge professionally.
6️⃣ Insurance & Fees
✔️Business liability insurance, travel agent insurance, membership fees, and professional association dues.
✔️Transaction or booking fees you pay to suppliers.
⚡ BONUS “Most Agents Miss This” Deductions
🌟Phone & Internet Split – Deduct the portion of your cell phone or internet used for business.
🌟Depreciation of Equipment – Computers, phones, and cameras used for work can be written off over time.
🌟Mileage – If you drive to meetings, expos, or client consultations, track your miles (or use a mileage app).
💡 Pro Tip: Keep detailed records and receipts for everything—even small purchases. The IRS loves documentation, and organized records make claiming deductions easy and stress-free.
