An excerpt from my book:
“Our mind will come up with a thousand reasons not to honor God. And most of them are perfectly rational. Like “I can’t tell that person the truth, it will hurt them!” or “I don’t need to need to pay my taxes, the government will just misuse my money!” These justifications maybe true, but no matter how much we wiggle and dance around the issue, God’s truth is still there, unchanged. “Thou shall not lie. Thou shall not steal.”
We know deep down that His way is best, but our sinful nature wants it’s own way. We build up mental defenses against God. The two most effective ones being busyness and noise. So we buzz around with the music cranked and a phone in our face. We fill every space, terrified of the silence.
But inevitably our vigilance wanes and His patient pursuit wins over. We find ourself in a still moment; and before we know it He begins to speak. Maybe not in sentences, but in a little prick of the conscience or a rush of unexpected joy. It is our God breaking through our defenses and getting our attention. We were made to be in relationship with Him. We are dying when we are disconnected from Him. So in His mercy He never stops pursuing us. This is a matter of life and death for us, so He will use whatever He has to use to get our attention.”
