🚨 Parents PLEASE protect your children’s personal information 🚨
Every tax season we see more and more cases of child identity theft. Someone gets access to a child’s Social Security number and uses it to file fraudulent tax returns, claim benefits, or open accounts illegally. Sometimes parents do not even realize it until THEIR tax return gets rejected.
Be careful with:
• School paperwork
• Social Security cards
• Medical records
• Old tax returns
• Mail left in trash cans
• Online forms asking for personal information
✂️ SHRED documents before throwing them away.
🔒 Store Social Security cards in a safe place.
📱 Do not text or message children’s SSNs unless absolutely necessary.
📂 Be cautious who you give copies of birth certificates and Social Security cards to.
If your child’s Social Security number is stolen, it can create YEARS of problems involving taxes, credit, and government records.
If your tax return gets rejected because a dependent was already claimed, do not ignore it. There are steps that can be taken to report identity theft properly with the IRS.
