Your bookkeeper might be great. But is anyone actually checking their work?

Lloyd is breaking down what auditors quietly flag when they walk into a business. And one of the biggest red flags isn't fraud or missing revenue.

It's this: "Susie handles it."

When one person owns the entire financial reporting process with no oversight, that's not efficiency. That's risk. Not because Susie isn't great. But because accountability protects everyone, including Susie.

At Faulk & Winkler, we see this more than you'd think. The businesses that catch problems early are the ones where leadership is asking questions, not just trusting the folder exists.

If you haven't already, give Business Cents a listen. Every episode is packed with insights you can actually use.

What a great few days at the 2026 BDO Alliance USA Conference in Las Vegas!

Our Faulk & Winkler team had the opportunity to attend, learn from peers across the accounting profession, and be part of important conversations shaping the future of our industry.

We were especially proud to see several of our leaders contribute to the conference agenda.

Tommy LeJeune, our Managing Partner, spoke on a growth panel focused on independence, mergers and acquisitions, and private equity, sharing real perspective on the decisions firm leaders are navigating today.

Scott Lazarone and Ben Vance also led a panel on integrating CAS and strategic advisory, discussing how firms can better serve business owners who are scaling, transitioning, or preparing for exit.

We’re grateful to be part of the BDO Alliance and proud of the way our leaders represented Faulk & Winkler. Opportunities like this help us continue learning, strengthen relationships, and bring valuable insight back to our clients and team.

Faulk & Winkler is proud to partner with Southeastern Louisiana University to provide scholarship support for accounting students who represent the future of our profession.

Events like this are a great reminder of why investing in students matters. The accounting profession needs talented, curious, and driven individuals who are ready to serve businesses, strengthen communities, and carry the profession forward.

We are grateful for the opportunity to support Southeastern’s Accounting Program and celebrate the students recognized at this event.

Congratulations to the scholarship recipients. We’re excited to see where your accounting careers take you.

Financial statements can be confusing. So can running a business.

But avoiding the numbers does not make the uncertainty go away.

In Season 1, Episode 7 of Business Cents, Melissa Terito and Lloyd Johnson break down financial statements in a way business owners can actually understand. Not because every owner needs to become a CPA, but because every owner needs to know what their numbers are telling them.

At Faulk & Winkler, we believe good financial information should lead to better decisions. Sometimes that starts with free education, like our Business Cents podcast. Sometimes it means having the right professionals in your corner to help you understand, plan, and move forward with confidence.

Listen back to old episodes of Business Cents to get valuable insights and let us know: what topic do you want us to cover next?

Rain couldn't stop us! After wrapping up another busy season, we gathered at Baton Rouge Country Club for our annual crawfish boil. A little weather sent us indoors, but the food was hot, the company was warm, and the fellowship was just what we needed.

Thank you to our amazing team for their hard work and dedication this busy season, and to all of our clients for the opportunity to serve you. Here's to another great year!

Tax returns are one part of the financial picture. They show what happened, but they do not always answer what should happen next.

For business owners, some of the most important financial conversations happen throughout the year. Your numbers can reveal what needs attention next, from cash flow and tax planning to reporting, growth, and the decisions ahead.

The numbers do not just tell you what already happened. They could help guide what happens next.

At Faulk & Winkler, we work with business owners to bring more clarity to the financial decisions happening throughout the year, not just around tax deadlines.

If you are not having those conversations regularly, now may be a good time to start.

As a business grows, the conversation changes.

The systems and strategies that worked at one stage may not be enough in the next. That includes your financial strategy and your retirement plan.

Growth can bring more complexity in reporting, tax planning, payroll coordination, plan administration, and compliance. It can also create a need to revisit whether your retirement plan still fits the business and the people behind it.

That’s why these conversations should not happen in silos.

Faulk & Winkler and Sentinel help businesses look at the bigger picture so financial strategy, tax planning, and retirement plan decisions are aligned as the business grows.

If your company has changed in the last few years, it may be worth asking:

Is our accounting support keeping up?
Has our retirement plan kept up?

If your business has grown, your financial strategy and retirement plan may be due for a closer look. Schedule a consultation with our team today:

Some conversations are worth coming back to.

In Episode 2 of Season 1 of Business Cents, Melissa Terito and Lloyd Johnson talk about something every business owner and leader eventually runs into: boundaries.

Not the surface-level kind. The real kind.

The kind of boundaries that affect how you lead, how you delegate, how you protect your time, how your team grows, and whether your business can keep moving without everything running through you.

In this clip, Melissa and Lloyd dig into that familiar feeling of being completely overwhelmed and what it may actually be pointing to: a deeper issue beneath the calendar, the inbox, and the constant fire drills.

This is the kind of valuable insight you don’t always get from a textbook or seminar. It comes from real business leaders sharing what they’ve learned by living it.

Go back and listen to Business Cents for valuable conversations that offer perspective you can carry into your own work, leadership, and decision-making.
