I've been a tax accountant for over 45 years. There are many taxpayers who do not want to file on time, so they ask for an extension. I would say that more than half of those people don't file on time because they don't want to pay the IRS. The truth is. Drum roll please............... What you owe the IRS is still due April 15. The paperwork is the only thing that goes on extension. If you don't pay what you owe with the extension, you are still penalized for underpayment when the tax return shows up. SO for those of you who want extensions, please be prepared to pay at least 90% of what you owed the previous year and include it with the extension.
ALSO! News flash. If you don't owe anything , there is no deadline.
If you are getting a refund, there is no deadline. Deadlines are only for the sake of the IRS getting their money.

This tax season was particularly brutal for tax preparers. I understand why clients wait till the last minute, but dang if it wasn't stressful the last two weeks.
I think my clients must think I only have a few people to prepare taxes for, and I should be on call and available when they need me. I try to be but when I have 125 tax returns to prepare, and 50 of them show up the last two weeks, I'm not ready to have chit chats on the phone. I would like to plea to all taxpayers to be kinder to your tax accountants and don't wait till the last minute to have your taxes prepared. And if you do wait till the last minute, have your act together and don't make me fish for answers. I survived, but it was brutal. Just sayin'

Dear Band leaders. Don't forget to keep track of the people you paid out. 1099s are due in January. The service I use to prepare and file and mail 1099s is E-file for biz.
