This may burst some folks' bubbles, but it must be said: there is no minimum amount for income that makes it reportable on your taxes. Yes, you owe on every dollar you make. While it may be tempting to let that small side-gig slip under the rug, don't do it. It's not worth the heavy conscience or the back-tax bill (plus interest) you very well may get hit with later.

We've mentioned this before, but something so impactful is worth repeating: take the opportunity now to double-check that you've selected the right amount of withholding on your W-4, especially if you were surprised by a massive refund OR a massive tax bill last year. (Anyone who works two jobs or who went through a major life event this year should pay special attention here.) If you've counted how many weeks are left before Christmas (the answer is 8), you know that this year is swiftly coming to a close. It's not too early to start thinking about any end of year giving you'd like to do. In order to receive a 2017 tax deduction for charitable gifts, they need to be given by December 31.

Great news if you will be filling out a FAFSA for yourself or a dependent: for the coming year, the IRS has re-instated the helpful tool that allows you to transfer your tax return data directly into the FAFSA form. It's another reason to get your return done early, so that when you need the info for financial aid, it's available.
