Accounting firms are reporting a surge in scams involving legitimate CP53E notices, which the IRS uses to request bank details when direct deposits for tax refunds fail. Over 1.4 million of these notices were sent by March 2026, and scammers are creating fraudulent versions to steal sensitive financial data.

Key Scam Tactics & Advice:

** How Scammers Operate: Fraudulent notices may include fake QR codes, direct you to non-IRS websites, or use threatening language to demand, for example, social security numbers, birthdates, or bank details.

** Verification: Verify any notice by logging directly into your official IRS Online Account to check for a copy of the letter.

** Action Required: Genuine CP53E notices request action within 30 days via the IRS Online Account; the IRS will not call or email to take this information over the phone.

** If Ignored: If the notice is not answered, the IRS will send a paper check, though this can delay refunds by up to 6–10 weeks.

** If in Doubt: Clients should contact our office immediately to confirm if the notice is legitimate.

New “Tax Appointment” System for 2025 Returns

For 2025 tax returns to be filed in 2026, our office will use a new tax appointment system for all individual clients.

What a “Tax Appointment” Means

-A tax appointment is not an in‑person meeting.

-It is the last date by which you are asked to deliver your tax documents to our office so we can prepare your return on time.

-You may deliver documents earlier than your appointment date if you prefer.

How Scheduling Will Work

-In early January, you will receive your scheduled tax appointment date by email and by letter.

-If the assigned date does not work for you, you may request a different date, subject to availability.

-You do not need to do anything now; simply watch for your appointment notice and plan to deliver your information on or before that date.

Capacity, Extensions, and Common Myths

-We are scheduling 60 appointments per week from February 2 through March 23, 2026 to manage workload and provide timely, high‑quality service.

-Once our in‑season capacity is full, we may need to file an extension for some clients. For most taxpayers, an approved extension moves the filing deadline from April 15, 2026 to October 15, 2026, but it does not extend the time to pay any balance due.

-Filing an extension is common and not a red flag. Extensions simply provide more time to file an accurate return, and the IRS does not require a reason to request one.

Final Notes

-If you are likely to owe tax, paying by the April deadline helps avoid interest and late‑payment penalties even if your return is extended.

-If you are due a refund, an extension generally does not cause penalties, and your refund is paid when your return is filed and processed.

Happy New Year—we look forward to working with you and supporting your tax needs in 2026.
