We know it may feel early, but a little attention now can make a big difference before the calendar gets busy with holidays, year-end work, and family commitments.

This is a good time to revisit your income, withholding, estimated tax payments, retirement contributions, charitable giving plans, and any major life changes that happened during the year. For business owners, it is also a smart time to look at income, expenses, equipment needs, payroll, and bookkeeping before the year comes to a close.

Be cautious with unexpected emails, texts, phone calls, or social media messages asking for personal information or payment. Remember: the IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by phone, email, text message or social media. Use strong passwords, turn on multi-factor authentication when possible, and avoid clicking links from messages you were not expecting. Lastly, always make sure you are using an official, secure IRS website before submitting any financial information.

If you have a Health Savings Account, or are considering one during open enrollment, it is worth taking a fresh look at how an HSA may fit into your overall tax and financial planning. HSAs can be a helpful way to set aside money for qualified medical expenses while also receiving valuable tax benefits.

For 2027, the HSA contribution limits have increased to $4,500 for self-only coverage and $9,000 for family coverage. Those age 55 or older can still make an additional $1,000 catch-up contribution.

Since the contribution limits are increasing for 2027, this is a good opportunity to look at your current HSA contributions and decide whether any changes make sense for the year ahead. A little planning during open enrollment can help you make the most of this benefit while setting aside funds for future qualified medical expenses. October is a smart time for business owners to conduct a payroll checkup before the fourth quarter gets too busy. A quick review now can help prevent year-end surprises, missed deadlines, and costly corrections.

▪ Review employee information: Make sure names, addresses, Social Security numbers, withholding forms, and direct deposit details are accurate.
▪ Confirm worker classifications: Employees and independent contractors are treated differently for tax purposes, so it is important to classify workers properly.
▪ Check payroll tax deposits: Employers generally must deposit withheld federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare taxes electronically and follow the correct monthly or semiweekly deposit schedule.
▪ Prepare for year-end forms: Clean payroll records make W-2 and 1099 preparation much smoother in January.

It’s important to remember that an extension provides additional time to file your return, but it does not provide additional time to pay any tax that may have been due. Filing before the deadline can help avoid unnecessary stress and may help limit additional penalties and interest if a balance is owed.

A week of leadership, insight — and a little fun!

The 2026 National Franchise Leadership Alliance Business Meeting was a great opportunity to connect with McDonald’s Owner Operators and industry leaders. We are especially proud to recognize Andrew Laufer for the leadership and commitment he continues to bring to the McDonald’s community.

During the meeting, Andy participated in a panel discussion on “AI in Your Restaurants: Decide, Protect, Use,” where he shared his perspective on how this rapidly evolving technology can impact restaurant businesses. His willingness to engage in these important conversations and share his experience is just another example of the many ways he contributes to the McDonald’s community.
