IRS Interest Rates โ€“ October through December 2025
The IRS has announced that interest rates will remain unchanged for the calendar quarter beginning October 1, 2025.
โ€ข Individuals: 7% for both overpayments and underpayments (compounded daily)
โ€ข Corporations: 6% for overpayments (4.5% if over $10,000), 7% for underpayments, and 9% for large corporate underpayments

These rates are set quarterly, based on the federal short-term rate, and are detailed in Revenue Ruling 2025-18 (IRB 2025-37, dated September 8, 2025).

If you have a balance due or are expecting a refund, knowing these rates can help you plan. Contact Strive Tax Group for strategies to reduce tax burdens and avoid costly interest.

Tax Tip: How long should you keep your records?

Most returns: 3 years

If income is underreported (25%+): 6 years

No return or fraudulent return: No limit

Refund claims: 3 years or 2 years after payment

Bad debt/worthless securities: 7 years

Strive Tax Group recommends keeping records for at least 7 years to stay safe in case of an IRS audit.

Alimony & Taxes: What You Need to Know!

If alimony is part of your finances, itโ€™s important to understand how it impacts your taxes. The rules depend on when your divorce or separation agreement was finalized:

๐Ÿ”น Agreements Finalized BEFORE 2019:
โœ… If You Pay Alimony: You can deduct it on your tax return.
โœ… If You Receive Alimony: Itโ€™s taxable income, so you must report it.

๐Ÿ”น Agreements Finalized AFTER 2018:
โŒ If You Pay Alimony: Itโ€™s no longer deductible.
โŒ If You Receive Alimony: You donโ€™t have to report it as income.
What Qualifies as Alimony?

โœ”๏ธ Payments must be part of a legally binding agreement.
โœ”๏ธ Must be made in cash, checks, or money orders (not goods or services).
โœ”๏ธ You and your ex cannot live in the same household when payments are made.

๐Ÿšจ Alimony vs. Child Support:
๐Ÿ’ก Child support is NOT taxable or deductibleโ€”donโ€™t mix it up with alimony when filing your taxes!

Lots of people ask me about write offs for their W-2 job. Letโ€™s talk about why this is not allowed anymore.

Writing off unreimbursed employee expenses as a W-2 worker effectively ended with the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), which took effect in 2018.

What Changed?

Before TCJA, W-2 employees could deduct unreimbursed job-related expenses as miscellaneous itemized deductions if they exceeded 2% of adjusted gross income (AGI). These included:
โ€ข Union dues
โ€ข Work-related travel
โ€ข Job-related education
โ€ข Home office expenses (if required by the employer)
โ€ข Tools and supplies

Under TCJA, these deductions were eliminated for tax years 2018-2025.

Who Is Still Eligible to Deduct Work Expenses?
1. Self-Employed Individuals & Independent Contractors (1099 Workers) โ€“ They can still deduct business expenses on Schedule C.
2. Certain Employees in Specific Fields โ€“ Armed Forces reservists, performing artists, fee-based government officials, and people with impairment-related work expenses can still deduct job-related costs.

Unless the law changes, W-2 employees wonโ€™t be able to deduct work expenses again until after 2025 when TCJA provisions expire.
