Plans send out their Annual Notice of Change in September, outlining what's shifting for January. Most people wait for that envelope to think about any of this. A little homework now makes those letters a lot easier to read.

Before the paperwork arrives, consider pulling together:

• What you actually spend on Medicare this year, not just the premium, but Part B, drug costs, deductibles, copays, specialist visits, the full picture.
• A simple list of your prescriptions, dosages, and pharmacy, since drug costs vary a lot by plan and formulary.
• Whether your current coverage still fits how you're actually using it this year.

This isn't about picking next year's plan yet. It's about walking into that decision with real numbers instead of guessing under a deadline.

December gets all the attention for tax planning. But by then, you're often making rushed decisions to beat a deadline instead of deliberate ones.

September and October are actually the better window, and here's why: you have real numbers instead of guesses, and enough time left to act on them thoughtfully.

A few things worth a look right now:

• Tax-loss harvesting. If you're holding taxable investments trading below what you paid, fall gives you time to be intentional about which positions to sell and how to reinvest, rather than scrambling in December.
• Roth conversions. If this was a lower-income year for you, whether from a career change, a business dip, or stepping back from work, it might be worth exploring converting some traditional retirement assets while you're in a lower bracket.
• Charitable giving. Well-timed gifts can make a real difference, but transfers take time to process. Confirm timelines now if you want this year's giving to count for this year.

None of these require a rushed decision today. They do require starting the conversation before the calendar runs out.

Freedom isn't a number in an account. It's a Tuesday afternoon with sand between your toes and nowhere else you need to be.

That's the version of wealth we build toward. Not just growth on paper, but a plan that actually holds space for the life you're trying to live.

If your financial plan doesn't feel connected to your actual life, it might be worth exploring why.

Grocery prices. Utility bills. Gas. For a lot of people approaching or already in retirement, these are the things keeping them up at night right now, more than market swings.

Here's what we'd gently push back on: rising costs aren't just a budgeting problem. They're a freedom problem.

When day-to-day costs climb, it's easy to start pulling back on the very things you built this whole plan for. Skipping the trip. Passing on the dinner out. Telling yourself you'll enjoy retirement "once things settle down."

But consider this instead: a financial plan built around your actual life should be able to absorb some noise without asking you to shrink your life to fit it.

If rising costs have you feeling less free lately, that might be less about the number in your account and more about whether your plan was built with enough room to breathe in the first place.

That's worth a conversation.

If you're a small business owner, September 15 is a date worth knowing.

It's the deadline for Q3 estimated tax payments. It's also the extended filing deadline for calendar-year partnerships and S corporations.

Easy to let this one sneak up, especially if this has been a busy year for the business. A few things worth checking before the date hits:

• Have your estimated payments kept pace with how the business actually performed this year? If revenue moved a lot, your earlier estimates might be off.
• If you're a partnership or S-corp on extension, is your filing on track?
• Beyond the tax piece, is your own retirement savings keeping up with the business, or has it quietly taken a back seat again this year?

You've worked hard to build something that runs well. Consider giving your own financial plan the same attention you give the business.

My grandfather was a serious investor — long before the internet made it easy.

He taught me one thing early: be a focused, long-term investor. And do your homework. Every time.

It's tempting to take shortcuts when everything is a click away. But the fundamentals haven't changed — balance sheets, income statements, due diligence. That's still how you build real, lasting wealth.

At BirdRock, that's how we approach every client relationship. Thoughtful. Thorough. No shortcuts.

Take your time. Do your research. Long-term success rarely comes to those who rush.

What if you didn't have to choose between paying for college and funding your retirement?

It's one of the most common tensions families face — and the good news is, with the right planning, you may not have to sacrifice one for the other. Here are three strategies worth exploring to help balance both priorities without putting your future at risk.

Which one fits your situation? Consider reaching out to a fiduciary advisor to map out what makes sense for your family.

Most people don't realize their portfolio quietly drifts out of balance over time.

When tech runs hot, suddenly you're overexposed — without ever making a single decision to get there. Rebalancing fixes that.

But the real work? It goes way beyond stocks.

It's asking:
📅 When do *you* want to retire — and when does your spouse?
🏡 Are you downsizing?
🎓 Is education funding part of the picture?
💛 What legacy do you want to leave?

Retirement looks different than your working years. Your plan should too.

If a major life transition is on the horizon, consider reaching out — we'd love to help you think it through.

Can a robo-advisor actually help you when life falls apart? No — and here's why that matters.

When you're going through a divorce, dealing with a car accident, or facing an urgent financial decision, a robo-advisor or AI tool can't pick up the phone. At BirdRock Wealth, a fee-only fiduciary financial advisor firm, real people answer when it counts.

Robo-advisors are built for routine. Human advisors are built for real life.

If you've ever searched "robo-advisor vs financial advisor" and wondered which one actually has your back during a crisis — the answer is a trusted, relationship-driven advisor who knows your name, not just your portfolio.

That's the BirdRock Wealth difference: fiduciary financial planning that puts your life first.
