Great news to share…

The Auburn office phone number has been ported over to a new service provider which will be much more reliable than the previous VOIP service. Our contact directory did not roll over in that port process so if you have previously communicated to us via text to the Auburn phone number please help us out and include your name in the text message.

Taking a day to focus on continuing education. We saw a lot of tax law changes that go into effect for the current tax year which makes continuing education even more important for tax professionals.

First on Heather’s schedule for continuing education….UNL’s 2025 Ag Tax and Management Symposium.

PLEASE BE ON ALERT!

Seems that the media has given the scammers a perfect opportunity to prey on individuals with the enticement of an economic impact payment that does NOT exist.

The IRS will never send you a text message regarding your taxes or stimulus money. Additionally ALWAYS be extra cautious going to a website and entering your personal information. I always recommend going to the official government site (www.irs.gov) and then navigating by links on the government site rather than entering a web address or even Google searching.

(And yes….the image below is an actual text message received yesterday. Best practice is to not even reply to the message, ignore it and delete it.)

It has been a busy few months in our office since there is so much that we do during the year besides just tax returns…so busy that posting on our page took a back burner.

Heather and Jill are busy today and tomorrow soaking up legislative tax updates and changes for this upcoming year by (virtually) attending the 70th Annual Federal & State Income Tax Institute that is offered by University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This has become one of the regular update courses that Heather (and now Jill) attends annually as she finds the information presented is very applicable to the clients we serve.

Did you know….

Licensed CPAs are required to complete a specified amount of continuing education hours in order to maintain their license. The number of hours can vary by state but the requirements for the states that Heather is licensed in is easiest broken down to at least 40 hours a year. While CPAs do have some discretion in the subject areas those credits cover, the overwhelming majority of the hours (roughly 24-36 hours out of 40+ annual hours) that Heather takes annually are in taxation.

ERC Scams...Be on the Lookout!

Our office has received a few phone calls recently with questions from clients and non-clients about solicitations in our area from 3rd party "salespersons" in regards to offering services in filing claims for the employee retention credit. The below IRS news alert from this past summer is a MUST READ for all business owners.

At the end of the day, if it seems to be good to be true, it likely is not true or there are some pretty major things left out of the information they are providing. If you think that your business might qualify PLEASE reach out to a licensed tax professional for a consultation. There are a few credentialed tax professionals that have either the CPA or EA designation behind our names in the Southeast Nebraska Area (Auburn, Nebraska City, Falls City). PLEASE save yourself the headache and consult a licensed tax professional before signing any of these engagement letters or any IRS forms authorizing them to obtain your tax information.

Tax Tip 2023-93, July 24, 2023 — Businesses and tax-exempt organizations should watch out for telltale signs of misleading claims involving the Employee Retention Credit. Scammers and unscrupulous promoters continue to run aggressive broadcast advertising, direct mail solicitations and online prom...

It is incredibly hard to believe that we are only a few weeks away from 2024 which means we are about a month and a half away from the IRS officially opening e-filing for the 2023 Tax Year!

We are excited to announce that we have a second person on staff to prepare and sign tax returns this year to speed up the flow of tax return preparation and processing. With having a second person on staff for tax return preparation that means we do have openings for a FEW new tax clients. If you are looking for a new tax preparer please reach out ASAP to our office (402-858-2041 Auburn / 402-873-5577 Nebraska City) to get your name on the list.

NEW CLIENT INFO:
If you are wishing to be on our new client list and are farmer or have other business activities you MUST come in and meet with Heather prior to year end to provide us with your prior year records. For potential new clients without business activity to report on your tax return, after March 1st we most likely will not be able to accept new tax clients for this filing season unless you are okay with your tax return potentially being put on extension filing.

End of the year means tax planning AND continuing education. Monday and Tuesday Heather will be in a continuing education webinar so her availability in Auburn will be limited to the scheduled breaks in the class. The office is open though if you need to drop off items for her to look over after hours.

We have something to be extra thankful for this week…Kelly and Travis welcomed a healthy baby boy early Monday morning into their family! Mom and baby are doing well and we are so happy for them.

Kelly is going to be out of the office for a few weeks which means the office in Auburn may have some disruptions in when it is open since Heather will be the one covering while Kelly is out. We will try to keep those disruptions to a minimum but there will likely be one day a week when Heather must be in the Nebraska City office for year-end tax appointments with clients up there.

Continuing education day for Heather Pemberton.

Did you know that one of the big differences between a CPA and others who offer accounting services is the requirement of continuing education hours? Heather holds a CPA license in Nebraska which requires a MINIMUM of 80 hours of continued education over the span of a 2 year period. Hours can be earned in any area of accounting and must be accredited by the proper agencies. Today’s education hours are via an agricultural tax issue update offered through UNL. The class has been full of so many updates and case law that will be useful for assisting our clients in the agricultural industry.
