The Massachusetts 62F refunds issued to everyone at the end of 2022 just might be taxable income to you, according to the IRS. The IRS is urging taxpayers in 19 states to hold off on filing their 2022 income tax returns until they decide how to treat the refunds. If you are a Massachusetts taxpayer, the refund won't be taxed at the state level, but the jury is still out on whether you'll be paying the IRS for that windfall.
They're dubbed inflation relief payments, but they reflect a hodgepodge of rules and eligibility requirements. The IRS wants time to figure out which rules apply to them.
