IN THE KNOW WITH CTO: A Roth IRA conversion can be a powerful move to create tax-free income in retirement and give you more flexibility in the future. This strategy is typically a great fit if you expect to be in a higher tax bracket later (career growth, Social Security, pensions, etc.), want to diversify your retirement savings between pre-tax and Roth for better tax control, have a lower-income year (job change, business loss, early retirement, etc.) and/or plan to leave assets to heirs and want tax-free distributions for beneficiaries (subject to rules).

By converting to a Roth IRA, you generally pay tax now so that qualified withdrawals later can be tax-free. This helps reduce future RMDs, create a tax-free cash flow during retirement and potentially lower Medicare premiums tied to taxable income. If you have thought about converting or would like to learn more about the benefits of Roth IRA conversions, call us at (508) 222-3005 and we will help you evaluate the tax impact as well as the best timing for your individual situation.

TOMMY’S TAX TIP: Having a will and an estate plan isn’t just smart—it’s the loving thing to do for the people you leave behind. It helps avoid surprises, reduces stress during an already emotional time, and makes sure your wishes are clearly documented. An estate plan can cover more than just a will—things like beneficiary designations, powers of attorney, healthcare directives, and how your assets are titled. We can help you get organized, coordinate with your attorney, and make sure your financial and tax details align so your plan works the way you intend. If you’ve been meaning to put a plan in place (or update an old one), we’re here to help you take the next step with confidence. Call us at (508) 222-3005 to get started.

At Castro, Thresher & Oliveira, we believe being part of a community means showing up for one another. Yesterday, members of our team had the opportunity to volunteer with the Attleboro Area Interfaith Collaborative (AAIC), an organization dedicated to providing food, resources, and spiritual care to neighbors throughout the Greater Attleboro area.

We were especially honored to support Food n’ Friends, AAIC’s largest program, by helping serve dinner at the LaSalette Shrine Cafeteria to individuals and families facing food insecurity. Giving back has always been an important part of who we are as a firm, and we’re grateful for opportunities like this to support the community we’re proud to call home.

Just a friendly reminder that the deadline to pay your second quarter 2026 estimated taxes is just around the corner – June 15, 2026. Typically, you may be required to make estimated tax payments if you receive income that isn’t subject to tax withholding such as: self-employment or freelance income, rental or investment income, Partnership or S-Corporation earnings and gig economy or contract work. It is important to pay your estimated taxes on time to avoid IRS penalties and interest. And remember to make these payments electronically to comply with the new federal mandate. For more information about paying your federal tax estimates online click here: https://www.irs.gov/payments. State estimated tax payments can be made online through Department of Revenue (DOR) website. Need help? Please call our office at (508) 222-3005 and we will be happy to assist you.

Trump Accounts (also called 530A accounts) are here—and the official app is now live. If you have a child born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, this new savings opportunity may be especially important to you. Eligible children may qualify for a one-time $1,000 Treasury pilot contribution once their account is opened and activated.

Trump accounts are tax-advantaged investment accounts created under the One Big Beautiful Bill to help children under 18 build long-term savings from an early age. Downloading the app gives parents and guardians a simple way to activate an account, track contributions and monitor investment performance.

Trump Accounts are available for U.S. children under age 18 who have a valid Social Security number. Children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, may qualify for a one-time $1,000 Treasury pilot contribution (scheduled to begin July 4) once their account is opened and activated. Parents as well as their employers, friends or other relatives may also contribute up to a combined $5,000 a year into the child’s account.

To get started, parents or other authorized individuals can submit Form 4547 when filing their taxes or sign up for an account on trumpaccounts.gov. Once active, you can manage the account in the app and begin contributions when funding opens. If you think your family may qualify, now is a good time to review eligibility and take the first step.

IN THE KNOW WITH CTO: Planning for education just got more flexible as funds in 529 plans and Coverdell ESAs may be used for a wider range of learning expenses including K-12 education, college and graduate school, and certain certification and workforce programs. Tax-free treatment generally depends on using the funds for qualified expenses, and some state rules don’t always match federal rules—so it’s worth double-checking before you withdraw. And be sure to keep receipts and statements with your tax records. If you’re considering a withdrawal—or deciding which account is best for your family—please reach out and we’ll help you coordinate the tax details.
