Trump Accounts (also called 530A accounts) are here—and the official app is now live. If you have a child born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, this new savings opportunity may be especially important to you. Eligible children may qualify for a one-time $1,000 Treasury pilot contribution once their account is opened and activated.

Trump accounts are tax-advantaged investment accounts created under the One Big Beautiful Bill to help children under 18 build long-term savings from an early age. Downloading the app gives parents and guardians a simple way to activate an account, track contributions and monitor investment performance.

Trump Accounts are available for U.S. children under age 18 who have a valid Social Security number. Children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, may qualify for a one-time $1,000 Treasury pilot contribution (scheduled to begin July 4) once their account is opened and activated. Parents as well as their employers, friends or other relatives may also contribute up to a combined $5,000 a year into the child’s account.

To get started, parents or other authorized individuals can submit Form 4547 when filing their taxes or sign up for an account on trumpaccounts.gov. Once active, you can manage the account in the app and begin contributions when funding opens. If you think your family may qualify, now is a good time to review eligibility and take the first step.

IN THE KNOW WITH CTO: Planning for education just got more flexible as funds in 529 plans and Coverdell ESAs may be used for a wider range of learning expenses including K-12 education, college and graduate school, and certain certification and workforce programs. Tax-free treatment generally depends on using the funds for qualified expenses, and some state rules don’t always match federal rules—so it’s worth double-checking before you withdraw. And be sure to keep receipts and statements with your tax records. If you’re considering a withdrawal—or deciding which account is best for your family—please reach out and we’ll help you coordinate the tax details.

What a night! Team members from Castro, Thresher & Oliveira had a wonderful time at The Literacy Center's 13th Annual International Tasting at Five Bridge Inn in Rehoboth, MA. We were honored to support this sold-out event as a platinum sponsor—helping advance TLC’s mission of enhancing lives and promoting self-sufficiency through quality adult education services. The Literacy Center helps adults learn English, build skills for better jobs, and become more engaged members of our community—and donor support helps keep these services free for all who need them. If you’d like to extend the impact of last week’s celebration, donations can still be made at: https://link.edgepilot.com/s/dabbf320/5eRYdCifCkiFhD5vDGPA4g?u=https://www.theliteracycenter.com/

IN THE KNOW WITH CTO: Many taxpayers don’t realize you may be able to deduct mortgage interest on your primary residence and one additional home (think: vacation home or second residence)—as long as the loan proceeds were used to buy, build, or substantially improve the home securing the loan. Two homes, one set of rules…that’s what we call a tax two-fer. There are rules that must be followed, loan limits can apply and you’ll want to keep good records/receipts. If you are not sure whether your second home (or refinance) qualifies, or whether it makes sense for you to itemize deductions this year, we are happy to take a look to maximize the deductions you are entitled to. Please reach out to a team member for more information by calling (508) 222-3005.

Whether you’re raising children, guiding a family, mentoring at work, or caring for others in your community, your impact is felt in more ways than you probably realize. From all of us at Castro, Thresher & Oliveira, we’re wishing you a Mother’s Day filled with appreciation, joy and a little time just for you.

IN THE KNOW WITH CTO: Starting with the 2025 tax year, more taxpayers are now benefitting from itemizing deductions on their tax returns—creating new opportunities for smart tax planning.

As you tackle your spring cleaning, consider donating gently used clothing, household items, or even appreciated assets. Non-cash charitable donations can help increase your total itemized deductions, reduce your overall tax liability, and in some cases, help you avoid capital gains tax.

Looking ahead, making these types of donations between now and 2029 could provide meaningful tax savings. Be sure to keep detailed records and receipts for all contributions and share them with your accountant. If the value of donated items exceeds $500, you’ll need to file Form 8283, and items valued over $5,000 will require a qualified appraisal. Even if you don’t itemize, you may still be eligible to deduct up to $1,000 in charitable contributions for single taxpayers and $2,000 for married taxpayers filing jointly.

If you have questions or want to incorporate charitable giving into your tax strategy, we’re here to help!

TOMMY’S TAX TIP:
Effective for tax years 2025 through 2028, the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB) created a new tax break for seniors aged 65 and over. For 2025, taxpayers can claim a deduction of up to $6,000 for single filers and $12,000 for married couples if they are age 65 or older by December 31, 2025. This new deduction is in addition to the extra additional standard deduction of $2,000 for qualifying single filers or those who file as head of household ($1,600 per qualifying individual for married filing jointly) that predated the new OBBB provisions. As you can see, these deductions can meaningfully reduce taxable income thereby presenting a window for strategic tax planning to preserve and build income. It’s important to note that the new senior deduction does not eliminate taxes on Social Security benefits and phases out at a rate of 6% for single taxpayers with income over $75,000 and married filers with income over $150,000, with a full phase-out at $175,000 for single filers/$250,000 for joint filers. If you are a client of CTO, aged 65+, please know we are working hard on your behalf to make the most of these provisions and provide the additional tax relief they were aimed at achieving.
