************************SCAM ALERT***************************
Do not fall for this scam, Ohio Department of Taxation does text message taxpayer's!

I have seen this text message it is very detailed and an excellent fake of the Ohio Departments of Taxation's "Where's My Refund" page.
Details below form Ohio Department of Taxation;

Ohio Department of Taxation Warns of New Text Message
Scam Including Website Impersonation
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Taxation (ODT) is warning taxpayers about text messages falsely claiming to be from the department that leads recipients to a website impersonating ODT’s site.
The text message states, “Your tax refund request has been approved and is now pending release.” It asks recipients to finalize processing by clicking on the link provided to confirm their account details. The fraudulent link takes users to a webpage that mimics ODT’s page and improperly displays ODT’s logo and branding.
“Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, even going so far as to copy our logos and create fake websites that look official,” said Ohio Tax Commissioner Patricia Harris. “I want Ohioans to know that the Department of Taxation will never contact you by text about your taxes or refunds. If you receive one of these messages, do not click the link—go directly to tax.ohio.gov to ensure you are on our official site.”
Important Reminders for Taxpayers:
ODT does not use text messaging to contact taxpayers about tax matters and does not request or disperse payment through text.
Here are some other important tips to keep in mind:
• Do not click links or respond to suspicious texts.
• Do not share personal or financial information via text.
• Verify the web address. Taxation’s official website is tax.ohio.gov.
• When in doubt, contact us through our official channels, found on tax.ohio.gov. Use the phone numbers and email options listed on our Contact Us page.
If you feel you have been the victim of an imposter scam, you should always contact local law enforcement as well as the credit reporting agencies to let them know your information has been compromised. You should also report it to the Ohio Attorney General as well as the Office of Consumer Affairs within the Division of Financial Institutions at the Ohio Department of Commerce at (866) 278-0003 or [email protected].

"A bonus $6,000 deduction for taxpayers 65 and older, good for tax years 2025 through 2028, to coincide with Trump’s second term in office. That means tax filers would see it in the refunds they get early next year.

In total, under the Senate bill, a married senior couple would get standard deductions of $34,700. Adding the bonus $6,000 each would bring their total deductions to $46,700. That compares to $43,200 under the House version."

The bill that passed the Senate includes a $6,000 senior tax deduction.

Made payment electronically but still got a notice!

June 12, 2025 — The IRS is aware that there is a delay in processing some electronic payments, and that some taxpayers are receiving IRS notices indicating a balance due even though payments were made timely.

Extremely disappointing!

"While the House tax bill that passed Thursday included “no tax on tips” and “no tax on overtime” provisions, the Social Security tax cut was missing."

"Watson says the tax cut in the bill is only about 14% the size of what Trump pitched during the campaign."

What’s in the “big, beautiful bill” instead?

Seniors need to call there congress person and tell them this bill does not uphold President Trumps campaign promise to eliminate tax on social security.

Social Security is still going to be taxable under the legislation just passed by the house. All they are providing seniors for relief is a $4,000 deduction, when calculating how much Social Security is taxable. This will have a minimal effect to even reduce tax on social security let alone avoid it all together

I don't think most people realize that the only tax tips and overtime are exempt from is Federal Income Tax. The tax exemption would apply only to federal income tax, so workers would still have to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes on their income, along with any state or local taxes.

And since many workers who get tip and overtime income are lower income many of them don't pay Federal tax anyway. As many as 40% of tipped workers already don’t make enough money to have to pay federal income tax on any of their earnings. Many tip earners don't even report the cash tips either. So making it exempt from Federal Tax simply makes their cheating legal.

The good news is the Senate is going to start all over again, with this legislation and then the two Houses will get together and reconcile. This is how the Sausage is made!

On the campaign trail, President Donald Trump sought to win over working-class voters in key swing states with a promise to exempt tips and overtime pay from federal income taxes.

Okay, finally it appears we have completely killed Beneficial Ownership Reporting! This is a Treasury Department Ruling not a court order that can be overturned by another court, to only then have another lawsuit filed to challenge the law again.

President Trump praised the Treasury Department late Sunday for its recent decision to suspend enforcement of the Beneficial Ownership Information reporting requirements.

The following is a statement direct from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) regarding the latest on the Corporate Transparency Act and Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) reporting. I will continue to follow the situation and update as necessary.

Alert: Ongoing Litigation – Texas Top Cop Shop, Inc., et al. v. McHenry, et al., No. 4:24-cv-00478 (E.D. Tex.) & Voluntary Submissions [Updated January 24, 2025]

In light of a recent federal court order, reporting companies are not currently required to file beneficial ownership information with FinCEN and are not subject to liability if they fail to do so while the order remains in force. However, reporting companies may continue to voluntarily submit beneficial ownership information reports.

****

On January 23, 2025, the Supreme Court granted the government’s motion to stay a nationwide injunction issued by a federal judge in Texas (Texas Top Cop Shop, Inc. v. McHenry—formerly, Texas Top Cop Shop v. Garland). As a separate nationwide order issued by a different federal judge in Texas (Smith v. U.S. Department of the Treasury) still remains in place, reporting companies are not currently required to file beneficial ownership information with FinCEN despite the Supreme Court’s action in Texas Top Cop Shop. Reporting companies also are not subject to liability if they fail to file this information while the Smith order remains in force. However, reporting companies may continue to voluntarily submit beneficial ownership information reports.
