Friends,
It has been a while since my last update because there wasn’t any news until now. As of this week, the national forest service has completed the new road extension to Mountain Light. Residents no longer have to walk a mile through the forest to reach the Sanctuary. However the road is still gated and not open to the public; only to residents and invited guests. They anticipate opening it to the public sometime this autumn. For the time being, Sanctuary guests must make prior arrangements for one of the residents to meet them to open the gate which is located just off the pavement. Once arriving at the parking area across the creek from the Sanctuary, residents and guests still have to ford the creek on a small foot bridge at water level.
Now that we are slowly moving to fully reopening once we have a bridge, there is still much to do in bringing the grounds and accommodations back up to what they were before Helene. Over the past year we have had a number of people who graciously offered to help us recover from the hurricane. Now that the road is open, we are welcoming volunteers for either a day or a few days for those who want to camp or stay in one of the available shelters. There is a need for grounds work (weeding, raking, etc.) as well as skilled labor (carpentry, plumbing, etc) and some deep cleaning in the shelters and lodge (window cleaning, etc). If you want to spend a day or a few helping out, please contact Reya, our volunteer coordinator [email protected] with any questions you may have or to make arrangements to visit.
I will send out the next update once we have more information about the bridge, relaunching our membership program and potential dates for fully reopening.
If you want to help but can’t volunteer onsite, we are still welcoming donations via our GoFundMe appeal at https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-restore-mountain-light-sanctuary?qid=c0c302498634aa3e768dade10aa26c04
