IR-2023-23, Feb. 10, 2023

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service provided details today clarifying the federal tax status involving special payments made by 21 states in 2022.

The IRS has determined that in the interest of sound tax administration and other factors, taxpayers in many states will not need to report these payments on their 2022 tax returns.

During a review, the IRS determined it will not challenge the taxability of payments related to general welfare and disaster relief. This means that people in the following states do not need to report these state payments on their 2022 tax return: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. Alaska is in this group as well.

Happy Holidays! Still no word from the IRS as to when the filing season will "open", but there are a few things that I want to make you aware of:

1. The IRS will be issuing two forms this year associated with the "free" money that was paid out in 2021 to some taxpayers, BOTH of which will be beneficial when filing your 2021 income taxes:

Form 6419 will be sent out between now and the end of January. This form is will summarize the amount of ADVANCE CHILD TAX CREDIT received in 2021.

Form 6475 will be sent out towards the end of January. This form addresses how much you received for your THIRD STIMULUS PAYMENT.

There were many delays in refunds last year due to improper reporting of the first two stimulus payments. Please supply these forms to us with your regular tax documents.

Our firm is making some changes this season. One of which is a new phone system which will allow you to reach us individually. Additionally we are taking steps to become a "paper-free" office. Tax organizers, copies of tax returns, invoices, etc., will be sent electronically whenever possible.

We look forward to seeing and working with you all again this year!

Trish

The office will be closed until Monday, November 8th, as we all attend my Daughter's wedding, and move John and Patty back home. We will be checking emails and voicemails when able to, but most work will be handled once we are all back home and in the office. Thank you for your patience.

Hello all! Normally this would be the last day of tax season for us, and would be the deadline to pay if you owe state and/or federal tax. Thankfully the Feds and most states, including Colorado, extended the tax deadline to May 17th. If we still have your stuff we are trying to get them done a soon as possible. If you would still like us to do your taxes please feel free to email or call us. The phones are busy this time of year, so if you don't get through, leave us a message and we'll try to get back to you as soon as we can. We will be closed April 16th - April 18th to get caught up on work. If you need to reach us, email would be best during that time. We apologize for the delays, please be patient as we get caught up with all the midseason changes thrown our way.

This just in: the 2020 filing season will begin on February 12th.

SPECIAL INFORMATION
IRS Opening Date for 1040 Electronic Filing
As of the date of this bulletin, the IRS has not announced an opening date. At the present time, the IRS is continuing to update its programming and processing systems for 2021 amidst the coronavirus pandemic and the recent passage of the Consolidated Appropriations Act (H.R. 133) that could affect the 2020 tax season.
Since the IRS will not process paper tax returns before the announced start date, there is no advantage to filing a paper return before the opening date. Therefore, filing paper returns before the IRS can receive such returns will slow the return’s processing. The fastest and best option for getting refunds is to use the IRS e-file program with direct deposit.

Happy New Year from all of us at A&T. We have started the process of getting tax organizers out to all of our existing clients. Tax organizers will only be MAILED out by request. All others will be emailed. Please contact us with email information if you do not receive an organizer this upcoming week and still need one.
A few new things for the 2020 filing season:
If you received a stimulus payment, you will be receiving a form NTC 1444 as a reminder of exactly what you received. We will need that form in order to process your return.
Subcontractor (self employment) income will now be reported on form 1099 NEC instead of the normal 1099 MISC. We have blank forms here at the office if anyone needs them.
Business owners will have to provide an accounting of the amounts received in PPP loans along with the corresponding expenses paid with those funds.
The office will be "open" for business starting Monday, January 4th, and will begin taking appointments January 18th.
Thank you!
