Does your business use independent contractors? The reporting requirements for these workers differ from those for W-2 employees. For payments made in 2026, businesses generally must issue Form 1099-NEC, “Nonemployee Compensation,” to contractors paid $2,000 or more (up from $600 for 2025). The higher threshold may reduce your administrative burden because you could have fewer forms to file with the IRS. However, it doesn’t change your recordkeeping, worker classification or backup withholding responsibilities. Contact us at (620) 442-3700 to help ensure you’re prepared for the updated reporting requirements.

An estate plan helps ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes. It also can minimize taxes, safeguard your minor children and support your charitable goals. If you haven’t reviewed your estate plan recently, call us at (620) 442-3700. We can help assess whether revisions are needed due to tax law changes or a major life event. If you don’t have an estate plan yet, we can help you get started.

The IRS has launched a new “Report Fraud” webpage to simplify confidential reporting of suspected tax fraud or scams. It consolidates multiple IRS fraud-reporting options into a single location, allowing taxpayers to report suspected scams, tax evasion or other tax-related misconduct in one place. This is the initial phase; the IRS plans to further streamline fraud reporting by reducing the number of forms, automating processes and adopting modern case‑management tools. We’re here if you have questions. Call us at (620) 442-3700.

Beginning in 2026, a new 0.5% “floor” applies to charitable deductions for taxpayers who itemize. This generally means that only qualified charitable contributions that, in aggregate, exceed 0.5% of your adjusted gross income will be deductible if you itemize deductions. But a charitable deduction for cash donations is now available to nonitemizers. We can help you develop a tax-smart charitable giving strategy for 2026. Contact us at (620) 442-3700.

Has administrative complexity discouraged your business from offering a 401(k) plan? Take a look at the safe harbor 401(k). The employer contribution obligation generally exempts the plan from nondiscrimination testing and other onerous administrative duties. Plus, this plan enables highly compensated employees to max out their contributions and can help attract and retain workers. Typically, employees are eligible to participate if they're age 21 or older and have at least one year of service. Call us (620) 442-3700 for details.

Do your employees pay out of pocket for business travel, meals or supplies? With a properly structured “accountable plan,” reimbursements are tax-free to employees and deductible for your business. (Remember, meals are generally only 50% deductible.) Without an accountable plan, reimbursements count as taxable wages and trigger income taxes for the employee and payroll taxes for both the employee and your business. Contact us at (620) 442-3700 to help ensure your reimbursement practices comply with the tax rules and minimize unintended tax consequences.

Did you know you can amend your tax return if you need to revise information after you filed it? Amended returns let taxpayers fix errors or omissions — such as income, deductions, credits or filing status — and make certain late elections. They can also be used to address tax law changes, claim losses and credit carrybacks, and more. You can e-file up to three amended returns per tax year. Usually, you have up to three years from the original filing deadline or two years from when you paid the tax, whichever is later, to claim a refund. But the rules can be complex. Contact us at (620) 442-3700 for guidance.
