Last Friday, I wrote about the importance of falling (or failing) on the path to growth and improvement (in climbing and business).

Today I would like to introduce you to the spotter. Spotting is a technique we use when bouldering (a specific form of climbing on large boulders short enough to not need a rope for safety when falling).

The spotter's job is not to "catch" a falling climber; a spotter only guides the fall of a climber so that they safely land on the mat below them. The most critical role of the spotter is to guide the fall in a way that the climber's head does not hit the ground.

When I decided to start my business, I was initially afraid I would fall on my face. As I thought of the worst-case scenarios, I realized that even if I failed in this venture, I had the support of many friends and family who, in a sense, would make sure I never landed flat on my face. I might not make any money, but I could not see a scenario where I didn't have love, food, and a warm place to sleep. I realize how fortunate I am to be in this situation.

To grow or improve, sometimes we need to make that fall a little bit safer. Take a moment to identify and acknowledge the spotters in your life. If you don't see any, how can you develop those relationships? Finally, I challenge you to take your turn being the spotter for someone in your life. Let's make this world a safer place to fall.

Remember to take time today to recharge.

Tip: Set a timer reminder for taking breaks throughout the day. No matter what, when the timer goes off, stop what you are doing and take a 5-10 minute break. If you feel you are super busy, even one minute can make a difference. Close your eyes, move your body, practice breathing, meditate, have a drink of water. Whatever you need to recharge. When you return to work, you will be ready to give generously to your work. 🧘‍♀️🧘‍♂️🌞🙏💪

A friendly reminder that if you are an individual business owner you are generally required to make estimated tax payments if you expect to owe tax of $1,000 or more when your return is filed.

The 2021 first quarter estimated tax payment for individuals is still due April 15.

The deadline to file and pay your 2020 federal income taxes was extended to May 17, 2021.

Rock climbing has played a significant role in my growth as a person. I would like to share some of the lessons I have learned from climbing and how they apply to life and business. 

“Do you ever fall?” is a common question I receive about my climbing experience from people who have never climbed. The answer is, yes, every single time I climb.

In climbing, falling is an integral part in the process of improvement. I was reflecting recently that it is one of the few areas of my life where I feel comfortable, in a sense, failing at something. I am comfortable because I have developed the mindset that failing (or falling in this case) is synonymous to learning. Every time I fall my body learns something about the movement and gets stronger.

Choosing to see failure as learning is a tool you can use in all areas of life. If we want to create or pursue something worthwhile we have to enter that space just outside of our comfort zone, that space that has a potential for a fall. Society has taught us that failure is something to be avoided or to hide. I am here to challenge you to gently welcome it when it comes. 

Starting Safi has been a huge step outside my comfort zone. I am ready to take some falls, learn something new, and grow beyond what I can possibly imagine.

I was having trouble choosing a name for my new business. I wanted a creative name (I didn’t want to use my name) and I also wanted to communicate my vision for starting the business. In this day in age coming up with a name that is available (think domains) adds to the challenge. After a few days of brainstorming and coming up short I decided to enroll the help of my family. 

Sitting around the kitchen table armed with phones and laptops my aunt, my cousins, and myself would take turns shouting out ideas only to look them up and discover the name was taken. But we persisted and after an hour or maybe two we succeeded in our mission. 

I had communicated with my family that clarity was the primary value I wanted to give to my clients. I wanted to take the tedious and confusing tasks of bookkeeping and accounting and replace it with a financial clarity that would allow my clients to run their business with confidence. 

One of my cousins had the bright idea of looking up some of the ideas we had come up with in greek. And to make a long story short we discovered Safi, which means clear in greek.  That is how Safi Solutions came to be.

Hi! My name is Karina Escalante and I am the founder and owner of Safi Solutions, LLC. A year ago today I would have been working 60+ hours a week leaving me without time and energy to pursue the experiences in life that I value. I decided to start Safi because I wanted to use my expertise to make a meaningful contribution to my community, but I also wanted to feel vibrant and healthy. I longed for a different pace of life. Is it possible? I am discovering that with intention, it is. What am I doing with this newfound freedom and energy you may ask? At this stage, a lot of experimenting.

Creating new structure and habits. Learning more about how my body works so I can be full of energy to serve generously. Learning how to heal. Learning how to cook. Taking dog walks and slowing down for cat snuggles. Reading a lot and learning a lot. Enjoying conversations. Trying new things. Building a business that gives me purpose. And to top it all off, a copious amount of rock climbing.
