Just received this notice relating to the State of New York:

Some NYS resident taxpayers who filed as married filing jointly or qualifying surviving spouse may have received a reduced refund or a bill indicating that additional tax was owed on their 2025 return. The Department of Taxation and Finance discovered an error in the tax computation that impacted a select number of returns. The impacted returns use tax computation worksheet 1 (generally returns with New York adjusted gross income over $107,650 and taxable income of $161,550 or less) to compute the tax due. Affected returns will be reprocessed automatically by DTF, and corrected notices including additional refund amounts, if applicable, will be sent directly to impacted taxpayers. NO TAXPAYER ACTION IS NECESSARY.

If you received one of these letters with a lesser refund... You will get the money eventually.

If you received one of these letters and sent more money... You will get the money back eventually.

If anybody is confused by any of this information please give me a call at the office

PEOPLE, PLEASE take your last pay stub for the year (for each employer with overtime pay) when you go to your tax preparer.

I have found mistakes in the employers calculations. Also, some put 100% of the OT pay, some record a calculated premium. I have at least one W-2 with an incorrect calculation so far, but I'm double checking them all.

If the preparer does not know which one they are reporting, or have not calculated it themselves from your stub, YOU could be losing out.

ATTN: TAXPAYERS

Very few employers are providing W-2s with overtime stated separately. You MUST bring in your last paystub of 2025... NOT the first one in 2026...So if you don't keep them, ask your employer for another copy.

The IRS finalized the W-2 for 2025 back in late 2024...changes for overtime pay made with One Big Beautiful Bill will be be shown on the 2026 W-2s

Plan accordingly, no legitimate tax preparer will guess for you, and you wouldn't want that type of preparer anyway.

Most notable change at the IRS this year is how you will get your refund....if you usually opt for a check, you will need to ask for a Refund Anticipation Check.... Because those are actually direct deposits to a different financial institution, who then generates a check on my end to hand to the customer.

DIRECT DEPOSIT is MANDATORY starting 1/1/26. If you don't have or can't have a bank account, PLEASE do NOT consider depositing into someone else's account. It's their money once deposited, and up to you to attempt to get it back.

There are many "non-bank" account options you can choose. It would be wise to know which one you want, and obtain their routing and account numbers for your preparer.

I caution against writing it down and handing it to your preparer because mistakes can happen. Many people read it to me off of their phones or their check, and some people bring me a little card from their financial institution with the info preprinted on it.

It's always wise to have your preparer read it back to you to confirm they entered it correctly!!!

If you already have direct deposit to any type of card now... You can bring the account information with you for your refund direct deposit. IT WILL NEVER BE THE NUMBER PRINTED ON THE DEBIT CARD for your safety. Please have the routing and account numbers provided by the non-bank issuer for your tax appointment.

ATTENTION: if you have a New York State Online Services Account and have not logged in during the past 3 years, please do so as soon as possible, and before November 2025.

All accounts which had not been active during the last 3-year period will be deactivated.

As a safety feature if you have an online services account and have used it within the last 3 years, I would suggest you go in and use it again anyway.

Logging in and signing out is all you need to do.

Sadly, Congress did not pass the portion of the Big Beautiful Bill regarding not taxing social security benefits.

There will be a TEMPORARY Senior Deduction...(AVAILBLE FROM 2025 - 2028)

It will be phased out for those with higher Adjusted Gross Incomes.

You MUST file jointly (if married)...and MUST use valid SSN...

Before you blame Trump...Congress didn't allow it. Trump tried
