October is here, and it’s a great time to start thinking about what you want your business to accomplish in 2027.

Before you put numbers into next year’s budget, take a look at what this year is telling you:

💰 Are you earning enough to cover your expenses AND pay yourself?

📈 Which costs have increased?

🗓️ Do your slower months need a bigger cash cushion?

🛠️ What will you need to invest in to support your goals?

Start with your actual results so far, estimate the remaining months of this year, and build from there. A useful budget should reflect your business not just what you hope will happen.

🐔 Today’s forecast: 100% chance of a bookkeeper running around like a chicken with her head cut off.

It’s September 30, the last day of the month AND the third quarter and I’m over here with 27 tabs open, reconciling accounts, tackling cleanups, and reheating the same cup of coffee for the third time. ☕😂

Oh, and somewhere in there, I’m heading to Winter Park for speed networking, then meeting with a client. Apparently, regular networking wasn’t fast enough for today’s schedule. 🏃‍♀️

Meanwhile, October is standing at the door saying, “Hey girl… ready to start next year’s budgets and projections?”

MA’AM. Can I finish September first?! 😂

But seriously, the fourth quarter is when we look ahead:

October is a good time to look beyond what came in and went out. Which services brought in the most revenue? Where did spending run over budget? What needs to change before you set next year’s goals?

That’s hard to answer if you’re still untangling transactions from July.

What if your numbers could help you grow your business?

Bookkeeping records what has already happened, but that shouldn’t be where the conversation ends.

When we look beyond the transactions, the numbers can reveal opportunities to:

✔️ Identify your most profitable services
✔️ Improve pricing or introduce service packages
✔️ Increase repeat business and client retention
✔️ Find underused days, appointment times, or staff capacity
✔️ Reduce expenses that aren’t producing results
✔️ Set realistic revenue goals and create a plan to reach them

✨ MONDAY BOOKKEEPER CONFESSION ✨

Even a bookkeeper can look at her Monday to-do list and think, “Where in the world do I even begin?”

Running a business doesn’t automatically make you perfectly organized every day. Some Mondays begin with a carefully planned schedule. Others begin with too much coffee, unanswered emails, and a list that somehow grew over the weekend.

Here’s what I’ve learned: you don’t have to fix everything today.

Choose one thing.

Open the bank statement.
Send the invoice.
Categorize a few transactions.
Schedule the payment.
Ask for the help you’ve been putting off.

Small steps still create progress, and progress creates clarity.

So, from one business owner to another: take a breath, choose your first step, and give yourself a little grace today.
