Some people assume that complex finances automatically require a courtroom fight.

They don’t.

Mediation can include detailed financial analysis, scenario modeling, pension valuations, business interests, executive compensation and other sophisticated financial issues.

The difference is the process.

Instead of each side building competing financial positions, the parties can work from shared information and evaluate options together.

Complex finances don’t necessarily require more conflict.

They require better information.

Keep the house.

Take more retirement.

Trade one asset for another.

Adjust support.

Each decision may sound separate, but financially, they’re connected.

A settlement that works when you look at one asset in isolation may look very different once taxes, cash flow, support, retirement income and future expenses are considered together.

That’s why we model settlement scenarios.

The question isn’t simply, “Is this asset division equal?”

It’s: “What does this entire settlement do to each person’s financial future?”

Cheap Mediation. Expensive Mistakes.

A $2,000 divorce mediation might sound like a great deal. And sometimes it is.

But reaching an agreement and understanding its financial consequences are two very different things.

You don't need a complicated divorce to make an expensive financial mistake.

Before choosing a mediator, understand what you're paying for—and what you might not be getting.

Because the cheapest divorce isn't necessarily the one that costs you the least.

When compensation goes beyond a regular paycheck, divorce planning gets more complicated.

A base salary may tell only part of the story.

Bonuses may fluctuate.

RSUs may vest over time.

Deferred compensation may reflect income earned now but paid later.

Incentive pay may not be guaranteed from year to year.

Before discussing support or evaluating settlement options, it’s important to understand what income actually exists — and what assumptions are being made about the future.

Better information leads to better decisions.

A $500,000 retirement account and $500,000 in home equity may look equal on a spreadsheet.

But are they?

One may be taxable when you use it.

One may require significant ongoing expenses.

One may be accessible today; another may not be available for years.

Divorce isn’t just about dividing the numbers.

It’s about understanding what those numbers mean for the life you’ll actually be living afterward.

That’s where financial analysis can change the conversation.

Divorce can affect your finances, your family, your home, and the future you thought you were building.

But difficult doesn’t have to mean devastating.

Divorce Unscathed was created to help people understand the decisions in front of them before those decisions become permanent.

Clear information. Practical financial education. Better questions to ask. Fewer avoidable mistakes.

Because getting through divorce isn’t just about reaching the end.

It’s about protecting your ability to build what comes next.

The house. Your monthly cash flow. The division of your assets.

It's tempting to solve each one separately.

But divorce finances don't work that way.

Keeping more house may mean keeping fewer liquid or retirement assets. The assets you receive can affect the income available to you. Support can change what housing is sustainable. Taxes can change what an apparently equal settlement is actually worth.

One decision moves another.

That's why we created “The 4 Financial Decisions That Matter Most in Divorce”.

It walks through the major financial decisions that should be considered together before you finalize your settlement.

50/50 sounds simple.

Add up the marital assets. Divide by two. Done.

Except the assets on each side of that equation may behave very differently after divorce.

Cash, retirement accounts, home equity, investments, pensions and business interests can have different tax consequences, liquidity, risk, income potential and future value.

So an equal division on a spreadsheet doesn't automatically tell you whether the financial result works for you.

The percentage matters.

But so does what is actually inside your percentage.

A settlement can look perfectly reasonable on paper and still leave you wondering how you're
going to pay the bills every month.

That's because net worth and cash flow answer two different questions.

Net worth tells you what you own.

Cash flow tells you whether the income and resources available to you can support the life you'll actually be living after divorce.

Housing. Insurance. Taxes. Food. Transportation. Healthcare. Travel. Savings. The ordinary and not-so-ordinary expenses of living.

Before you agree to the division of assets and support, you need to understand how those pieces work together.

Because the goal isn't simply to leave divorce with assets.

It's to be able to live afterward.

Keeping the house can feel like one of the most important decisions in divorce.

And sometimes keeping it makes perfect sense.

But “Can I afford the mortgage?” isn't enough information to make that decision.

If keeping the house requires a substantial buyout, takes most of your available cash, reduces your retirement assets, or leaves little room for the unexpected, the house may affect far more than your monthly housing expense.

The better question is:

What will my entire financial life look like if I keep it?

That's the math worth doing before you decide.
