Custodial UGMA or UTMA accounts for minors may offer investment flexibility but they may need to be restructured prior to the student's Base Year.

One option is to consider transferring the value (though not the individual investments) to a custodial 529 Plan since the asset value is assessed differently than the UGMA or UTMA.

For those families who may be eligible for needs-based financial aid, this may be an important strategy to implement.

To avoid problems, you should consult with a qualified college financial planning professional at College Cash Pro - service of Steve Stanganelli CFP.

Looking for some free money? Who doesn't like the sound of that? You'd be surprised but more than a million households skip submitting a FAFSA college financial aid form each year because they think it's a "waste of time" or that they "make too much money" to qualify for anything.

Time to think again.

Call me if you need help.

"The simplest answer to the question “Do elite colleges matter?” is: It depends on who you are. In the big picture, elite colleges don’t seem to do much extra for rich white guys. But if you’re not rich, not white, or not a guy, the elite-college effect is huge. It increases earnings for minorities and low-income students, and it encourages women to delay marriage and work more, even though it doesn’t raise their per-hour wages."

Worth a read if you're stressing about college choices. It may make a huge difference to your personal bottom line and your parents' retirement hopes.

Research suggests that elite colleges don’t really help rich white guys. But they can have a big effect if you’re not rich, not white, or not a guy.
