Received some thoughtful gifts? 🎁 Let's delve into the tax implications: In the U.S., individuals can gift up to $17,000 per person annually without triggering gift tax reporting. This means you can receive gifts from as many people as you'd like, and as long as each gift is under this limit, there are generally no tax implications for the recipient.

If someone gives you more than $17,000 in a single year (as of the 2023 income tax year), they may need to file a gift tax return. However, this doesn't necessarily mean they'll owe taxes immediately. There's a lifetime gift tax exemption, which is the total amount one can give in their lifetime without paying gift taxes. As of the latest update, the lifetime exemption is $12.92 million.

So, if someone gifts you $20,000, for instance, the first $17,000 is exempt, and they only need to report the remaining $3,000 toward their lifetime exemption. It's crucial for both the giver and receiver to be aware of these rules to ensure compliance with tax regulations. Always consult with a tax professional for the most up-to-date and accurate information.

The IRS just announced the inflation adjustments for 2024 for certain tax provisions. This includes the standard deduction which is being adjusted as follows for the 2024 income tax year (tax return filed in 2025)

The standard deduction for married couples filing jointly for tax year 2024 rises to $29,200, an increase of $1,500 from tax year 2023. For single taxpayers and married individuals filing separately, the standard deduction rises to $14,600 for 2024, an increase of $750 from 2023; and for heads of households, the standard deduction will be $21,900 for tax year 2024, an increase of $1,100 from the amount for tax year 2023.

Are you worried that you are going to have a large surprise tax bill when you file in 2024? Or are you like me and don't like the idea of giving Uncle Sam an interest-free loan for the better of part of the year? In either case, you may want to tax advantage of the IRS' free withholding estimator before it's too late. It takes all of 10-15 minutes to complete, about the same time you'll spend following a random Wikipedia rabbit hole.

Using recent paycheck information, and details from your self-employment and investment activities, among others, you can quickly determine if you are withholding the proper amount of income tax from your paycheck. Financially speaking, the optimal scenario is generally considered to have ZERO due and ZERO refund at tax time.

I'd recommend you do this a few times a year, so that you can avoid that awkward annual conversation with your accountant where you ask why you owe so much, followed by your deer-in-the-headlights look when they ask you if you did the withholding checkup they recommended :)

Like the idea? Give the estimator a try today!

Are you contributing to a 401(k) plan or Individual Retirement Account (IRA)? The IRS announced yesterday that the amount individuals can contribute to their 401(k) plans in 2024 has increased to $23,000, up from $22,500 for 2023.

The contribution limit for employees who participate in 401(k), 403(b), and most 457 plans, as well as the federal government's Thrift Savings Plan is increased to $23,000, up from $22,500.

The limit on annual contributions to an IRA increased to $7,000, up from $6,500. The IRA catch‑up contribution limit for individuals aged 50 and over was amended under the SECURE 2.0 Act of 2022 (SECURE 2.0) to include an annual cost‑of‑living adjustment but remains $1,000 for 2024.
